Most Tampa Bay area commuters drive alone | TBO.com

Quote:
People continue driving solo for a lot of reasons, transportation experts say:

The region's sprawling web of bedroom communities offers little or no bus service, leaving the family car as the primary way of getting around.

Those same communities offer few jobs close to home, making them virtual ghost towns during working hours as people leave for jobs elsewhere.

Mass transit competes with cars for space on crowded freeways, making a bus trip longer and less convenient than that same trip by car.
So they "know"!

The part about the "me" time is exactly why PT will never work there (or in any other sprawled area e.g AZ, NV, TX etc)! Its like they're trying to dis-invent the car, now that they realized it creates "too much" traffic!!! DUH?!

Thinking about the whole Tampa bay area and how its spread out trying to institute public transit would be a logistical nightmare..
Most of Florida and the rest of the USA for that matter is set up the same way,its all about the car and if you dont have one you'll be leaning on some one who does. Not sure its a bad thing but its sure going to be tough if we run out of gas or gas starts costing us $10 a gallon.
And even if there were public transit at this point youd never get enough people out of there cars to make the system viable..

There needs to be a shift in residential living before PT would ever work! Ppl need to move closer to where they work...etc. etc. etc.

This isn't news; it's all common knowledge.

Just another reason why I'll never live in some subdivision.

I drive alone to Tampa daily from the burg. I would love being able to take public transportation. There are now enough clustered business areas (DT St. Pete, Carillon, Westshore, DT Tampa, I-75 business park clusters, USF) that some type of express transit would make sense.
