I will be flying into Tampa airport the second week of March 2012 and will be staying for 6 days in the area. What is the cheapest place to rent a car for the week with unlimited miles?

I see the pricing on Orbitz, Travelocity, etc. and was wondering if there are any better/cheaper alternatives than the big name rental companies at or near the airport?

It seems that even the cheapest car including tax/fees is about $42 per day for a junky economy car... that seems pretty high still! I was thinking a car should of this class should be sub $30 per day including all tax/fees.

Thank You!

Have you tried the individual websites of car rental places?

Like:
Hertz Rent-a-Car - Rental Car Discounts, Coupons and Great Rates
Enterprise Rent-A-Car - Rental Cars at Low Rates

You get the idea?

I don't think those sites have the best deals...sometimes going directly to the car rental websites might get you a better deal.

I would suggest: Rental Car Discounts and Codes

The site has great coupon codes! They show which rental companies are in terminal, out of terminal, etc.

You get some 5 to 10% discount if you are a member of AAA often times. Did you try that?

Do you need out of the box idea? How about a small pick up from Uhaul ?

You don't have to carry anything around. Small pickups are 19.99/day plus 0.59/mile. So, if you are driving under 20mile per day, it will put you around $30/day that you are looking for, lol. I know it is not pretty but, hey, you will save some money .

I just returned a rental today to Dollar at TPA. Picked it up Saturday morning. Total cost Sat-Tues, AND I paid for the full tank of gas- $120.00. The gas charge was $56.00, so rental for 3 full days was $64.00- less than $22.00 a day. Are you sure you aren't getting prices including all of the extra insurance, etc?

= 42/day. That's what the OP says.

That included buying their gas. If I hadn't done that, the rental was less than 22 a day. Of course the OP has to figure in gas. I thought he was looking for basic rental prices.

No. Re-read it...as a sentence, not as an equation.

It was $64 for the period of 3 days (64 / 3 = ~$22). He wasn't saying $64 minus $22 = $42.

At any rate, nothing beats Hertz in my opinion...and you can usually find coupon codes on the internet or see if you get some discount with your company, insurance company, or other association you are a member of.

I'll re-word it. I paid 22.00 a day for a car rental- nice, new Ford Focus.
That included the taxes and fees.
