I cried tears of joy the day I left that hellhole area. My last day in the Durant-Valrico-Lithia area was July 15th 2001 and I've never stepped foot back in that area since and I doubt I ever will. Been to Tampa/St. Pete many times since then, I find it hard at times to even go to Brandon.
I hear the area has grown up alot in the last 10 years and to be honest, It could grow to be the size of Tampa, I would still never return. If you're into desolation and rednecks at every turn then well... yeah..

There may be less crime and decent weather but that is about it. Yes, the university system is great and it's an ok place to raise a family. BUT, besides that for a young 30 professional it's BORING! It's very small, has a lot of chain restaurants, only a few music venues and not alot of options outside of Raleigh unless you want to drive 2.5 hrs to Charlotte or 4 hours to Asheville or 2 hours to the beach. It's stuck in the middle of nowhere and so I'm out. I have friends from all over that have moved to Tampa and love it. So, sure every decent big city has crime (I use to live in LA- and work in South Central) and Tampa is actually relatively cheap to many other cities it's size that is near the beach and other big cities. So, what is the catch people? People are rude everyone. I grew up in the midwest, I lived on the west coast, I've lived in Raleigh, NC (which by the way- people are very backstab-ish, I mean it's the south. So, the same crap happens in every city. I just thought I'd give my two cents and see if anyone had a real reason to say such bad things about Tampa.

I've lived in Raleigh and Tampa and I wouldn't get too excited about Tampa if your complaints about Raleigh are chain restaurants and lack of music venues. You aren't going to find any better in Tampa. You'll actually find more chain restaurants there. I really don't get the chain restaurant thing. With Durham and CH there are a ton of independent places.
In Tampa you can get to Orlando in two hours and that's about it for a short drive. Raleigh is located a lot better in terms of reaching places on the east coast. DC and Atlanta are decent drives and the mountains are pretty easy.

What happens to the people who judge others?
People who feel negative about something are more apt to try and drag others into that negative space. That is why it seems like everyone is bashing Tampa, but if you really look at it you will discover it is far from everyone.

Yeah. In theory that is great. I agree somewhat a place is what someone makes it but you can't turn negatives of a town into positives by being a "positive" person.

Change the way you look at the world and the world changes. There is no theory, that is fact. Sure there might be no employment, or the govt might be spending in a poor way, but those things no longer become problems of the little me, they are simply situations.
