If the smoke that disturbs you comes from someone who rents, find out if the rental agreement contains a no-smoking clause; these clauses are becoming more common. If it does, then the tenant is violating the lease and you may be able to convince the landlord to enforce the clause (that is, tell the smoker to stop or move out). If the smoker refuses to honor the clause, it's up to the landlord to take the next step (evict the smoker). When a lot of neighbors complain, the landlord may be more motivated to take action.
Even if the lease does not prohibit smoking, the landlord may have grounds to evict the smoking tenant if the cigarette smoke is truly troublesome and interferes with your ability to enjoy living in your own apartment unit. All tenants enjoy the right to "quiet enjoyment," a quaint-sounding legal principle that gives tenants the right to occupy their apartments in peace and also imposes upon them the responsibility of not disturbing their neighbors. (Some leases and rental agreements include a clause that spells out this principle, but it applies to everyone even if it's not in the rental documents.) AHA! I will talk next week to my l-lord,, but will buy my air purifier as well,

I just had to have my a/c lines vac'd/cleaned as well. Not for smoke odors or anything but the line was clogged and the drain pan had filled up, cutting off the a/c system. I asked the a/c guy what I could do to prevent this kind of backup in the future and he said to pour a 16 oz. cup of pure bleach into the reservoir just outside of the air handler once a month to keep the line clean.

same happened to me - used diluted bleach and it did the trick...also had the line vacuumed afterwards....neighbor told me that bleach can screw up the lines - don't believe him. He recommended distilled vinegar.

Yup, my AC guy told me to pour a cup of bleach once per month. Bleach does NOT screw up the lines.

Not just that, but people need to stop throwing their butts in the streets and beaches too! I am going to start a petition with the city, because this is getting way out of control, and besides being rude, its LITTERING! We are not pigs, we have awesome roads, and it is really rude, and shows complete lack of common sense when you are not using your car's ashtray, and use the streets as ashtrays. (and worst, blow YOUR smoke in my car).
A week doesn't go by where I don't see someone(usually pick up trucks) and here comes a cigarette butt out the window.

I don't get it, you're smoking in your vehicle(so you're already stinking it up), you have an ashtray in your vehicle, empty it out. I would bet the interior of their cars/trucks aren't exactly tidy, so a few cigarette butts really don't matter.

There are a lot of pigs around here.

Well whatever the problem was re: that stinky smoke, it has subsided since the a/c was cleaned out in my unit. I also popped $30 for a used air purifier, and ordered a new filter at the tune of $60,,, but as this was not an every day problem, I hope that filter will last a long time. I did complain for records sake and i hope whatever was causing that reeking smell of cigarretes never comes back. Remember smokers,, that stuff is deadly! keep it to yourself..

As a fat smoker, I find this thread highly entertaining. Your tears are more delicious than the Diet Coke I typically order with my Double Quarter Pounder (with cheese)

Do you believe that you have no habits that annoy others?

I know that you have at least one - whining on the internet.
