TAMPA, Fla. (AP) The Tampa City Council has agreed to spend $24.8 million from a federal security grant to pay local and out-of-town law enforcement officers to work during the Republican National Convention.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that officials plan for Tampa police officers and Hillsborough County deputies to have the most contact with the 15,000 protesters expected at the Aug. 27-30 convention. They work together already, know the community, will have the most training and will have the biggest stake in how the rest of the world sees Tampa.

Of that $24.8 million, $4 million is earmarked for city salaries. The other $20.85 million will go to 3,000 or more officers from 63 different agencies around Tampa Bay and the rest of the state.

I work downtown, I can tell you it's gonna be an absolute ****ing zoo. The city is spending tens of millions of dollars, some of it their own, most of it federal. Money being wasted left and right.

Atleast a large chunk will be made up with the influx of people spending their money here and them doing some decent improvements to the area.

Thats my positive side, my real thought is that they need to stop wasting our tax dollars on these people who claim to be "one of us". I dont know about you guys but I don't roll in limo's, rolls royces or any of the other fancy cars. I dont have 24/7 security and I also don't stay in several hundred dollar per night hotels.

Stop raising my taxes and wasting the money, how about you do what you claim your going to do... lower taxes, bring the troops home, invest money in our own country, etc...

There will most likely be a huge return in revenues...this is a win win situation to put Tampa on the map as a great city!

At the last convention many lost money,,, watch that fence,, I'm praying for rain,, hope to keep people safe -specially our men n women in blue,,, some come to have fun but some come to spoil the party. More revenue is good, but safety 1st. I really wished the children did NOT start school that week... I am very very unhappy about that. Traffic will be bad and they promise trouble in paridise, I do worry about the kids. Parents alot of unknowns coming to this event and not all are nice folks with good intentions... be watchful... please, lets not put our head in the sand.

I'm very happy that the people working the convention will increase their financial pipeline. But, the one thing I can't stop thinking about is the fact that Tampa has hosted at least two Super Bowls and spent a lot less money without all the drama. Is it because the politicians think they're better than everyone else? Probably. Is it wasteful? Absolutely.

The superbowls only have people who are FOR the game! They do not come to destroy for political reasons... why not read on past political events and see what happens in the cities.. trouble is brewing my friend- like it or not.

My husband works at the county center in downtown and they have to move out for about two weeks! I hope this thing pays off for Tampa and that there aren't too many problems with crazy protesters and such.

The Waldo FL PD.....experts in crowd control for sure in a BFE town with a population of 900, but hey a couple of cattle busting barbed wire and standing on Route 16, close enough. FBI,DEA,INS,CIA, FDLE...acronym us to death and waste that money.
