OK, I was invited by a friend of mine to move in with him in October, he lives in Tampa. Thinking about saving up about $5k and moving if I don't find a job down there ahead of time, any advice on the job market in Tampa (preferably the Brandon area)? I don't want to not do this and regret it, I'm stuck in a rut in Maryland and need something new. (No college experience, about 10 years of working in the grocery industry, mostly night crew and deli, but would DEFINITELY be open to a new career) I will also be there on vacation in 2 weeks, for 9 days.

Try calling them and speaking with the manager about rates and then mention that you have 10 years of experience.

I don't work there but I know two who do. One works at Sweetbay in the Bakery and makes $13 per hour. He doesn't get to bake much because almost everything is shipped in frozen. Another works at Publix in Produce and he makes $13.75 per hour. The 2nd guy also worked at Sweetbay and he says he liked working there much better, but Publix has better benefits. Publix is one of the largest employers in Floridda.

I have a friend who just got a job at Sweetbay. She is getting paid minimum wage. First she was on the register, then they moved to her the deli where she still is getting paid minimum wage. Maybe it is her lack of experience. She works only part-time. I think it would be difficult to find a full-time job at either Publix or Sweetbay. Publix is harder to get a job at.

It really isn't difficult. Experience helps, but anybody who is going in new is going to start at minimum unless they are bringing lots of experience along with them.

I'd use the night shift as an advantage as not many people like to do it, In your job search look for large factories/warehouses that work around the clock, Large distribution centers, bakeries, dairy processing plants, office cleaning and security companies, airports usually go round the clock in many departments, postal service including UPS and Purolator,DHL are all active 24/7

Awesome, thanks for all the advice everyone! I LOVE the area down there, but I wouldn't dare relocate without a job... I'll have to stick out my misery in Maryland for a while longer until I find something!

Does Publix even have a night shift crew? At least my store doesn't. I'm not sure about Sweetbay, but Publix pays very well compared to places elsewhere.
