Most of the bay area does not have access to plumbed gas system directly to the house. And there is a stigma with gas tanks, so that's why. It's really simple.

I lived in 2 homes in FLA that had gas service, and had gas appliances, it was ok except the oven.

GAS OVEN SUCKS!!!

Cheval has gas...as in Propane, there was talk to switch to natural, but it hasn't happened yet, my December 2008 bill was $448!!!!!!!!!!! NO THANK YOU! I bow to electricity any day now.

Ironically now we have natural gas here for the water heater and stove, and I like cooking with gas, that's what I had in Europe, and the bill is $20 bucks, BUT if I could replace the water heater with an electric one I would in 5 minutes, mainly that very small one that heats up the water when you need it.

Like someone else said you can have a gas line added if there is one near by, it will cost...but if you're so adamant about cooking with gas, you can make that happen. There is another gated subdivision on County Line Rd that has propane...that one though stay away from like the plague because they jack those prices up like there's no tomorrow.

According to the average therm usage, its listing us at about .3 to .4 per day.
Thanks for making me go back and look at my past bills. Depending on my usage, they have periodically changed my rate class. From their rate tariff, here is how the Peoples Gas monthly charge is calculated:

Annual usage -- rate class -- monthly charge:

0-99 therms -- RS1 -- $12/mo + tax
100-249 therms -- RS2 - $15/mo + tax
250-1,999 therms -- RS3 - $20/mo + tax
2,000-9,999 therms -- GS1 - $35/mo + tax

I am not sure whether this annual usage is calculated on a rolling 12-month basis or if they take a snapshot once a year. Either way, it looks like if I heat the pool just once, it pushes me from RS2 to RS3, incurring a fee of $60+tax=$70 a year. Good to know.
