I plan on driving to D.C. for Christmas and spend with family and friends there.

For those who have done this trip, where is the best half way place that we take a break while sight seeing? The two places that we want to visit (Savannah, GA and Raleigh, NC) seems to leave me with 10hours of driving the next day, if I make only one stop. Where is a nice place on the way where we can take a break and visit places.

I normally fly and never took the drive before so I figure what the heck I will try this time. We have 4WD, hopefully I will be OK, if there is snow on the way.

Any idea is appreciated.

Firstoff, Raleigh, honestly there is nothing to see there.

If it was me, I would just bite the bullet and drive straight through. I have done it many times, it's honestly not that bad. You can do it in 14-15 hours depending on how often you stop for food/gas.

Savannah and Charleston are nice, but only about 5 and 6.5 hours away, not even halfway.

Virtually nothing worth stopping to see in NC or Virginia on the I-95 corridor. Unless you like Richmond (no)

If you want to stay on I95 the whole way I would stop in Savannah. Savannah is about the 1/2 way point between Tampa and Raleigh. DC will be about another 4.5-5hrs from Raleigh taking US1 & I85/I95. There will be more touristy/historical stuff to see in Savannah vs. Raleigh.

Check out downtown Raleigh if you want to see what Tampa could be.

Map it out and pick the spot at the half way mark. Stay there.

Aside from Savannah and Richmond there isn't really anyplace worth stopping on I-95 between DC and Florida. However if you don't mind deviating from I-95 for a bit you could include Charleston (just take US 17 from Savannah to Charleston, and then take I-24 back to I-95).

Ever been there?

Comparing a city like Raleigh with Tampa is apples and oranges. Raleigh is much smaller and lacks the problems with have here with illegals and diverse people.

Just for four decades.

Raleigh is actually slightly larger than Tampa when you compare them as cities and not metro areas. There are plenty of illegals in Raleigh, I'm sure. Is "diverse people" some sort of code word for ghettos?
