This is done from my perspective, not necessarily from all of Puerto Ricans.

1. Proximity to Puerto Rico. Yes, I know Miami and South Florida are closer. But South Florida is a very heavily populated area which does not make it appealing to those of us who are more introverted or do not like the party scene, traffic jams and overall stress that comes from living in a heavily densely populated area. I guess some would prefer Orlando since there is where most Puerto Ricans live in the state, but I prefer to be closer to the coast. From TPA, for about $200 round trip Puerto Ricans can fly to the beautiful island in about 2.5 to 3 hours which is much better than traveling from north.

2. Cheap travel to Puerto Rico. As I said, you don't have to pay that much to travel to PR from Tampa. Compare to California and Hawaii; 2000 miles apart and not less than four times the price to fly. Also, the climate between Puerto Rico and Tampa is not that different, so at least you won't feel so homesick in Tampa as in other areas. And if you want to see some mountainous feeling, although you won't see a place like Jayuya or Utuado near the Bay Area, at least Pasco and Hernando offer rural feelings that cannot be seen, say in Miami. Again, Orlando area has Clermont and the west suburbs but still lacks the beach.

3. Food. Tampa has several Puerto Rican restaurants with good food, I went to 2 of them - La Casona and La Lechonera in Armenia Ave. You can get flan and other similar food in supermarkets and I also heard some places in Tampa (as well as Orlando) sell Medallas, just in case you like good beer.

4. Climate. Tampa gets cold only when cold fronts and blizzard tails from system dropping snow up north pass by the area, while Puerto Rico gets rain from the cold front but don't see winter-like temperatures when they pass by. Other than that, Tampa stays relatively green, a feature that can only bee seen in Florida peninsula and by Gainesville and Jacksonville you no longer see it. The climates are very similar.

If you add all the other benefits in other previous threads, there is IMO no other place in the United States as comfortable to live if you are Puerto Rican than the Tampa Bay Area.

You are assuming all Puerto Ricans like the same things. I would make the case for the NYC area, as evidence by the 1,000,000+ that already live there. BTW Mi Pueblo Cafeteria on Spruce has the best PR food, hands down.

Puerto Ricans are leaving New York, not moving there. It is losing the Puerto Rican population. There are Puerto Ricans who don't mind moving to any other states but most are preferring Florida because anew York is very far and to travel from there is somewhat more expensive, and New York does not have anything similar to Puerto Rico.

Sorry, I am not following your logic . NY did not get far from Puerto Rico NOW. It was that far before the 1m+ people arrive there (BTW, I don't know how many are there. I am just following the previous poster's number). If they are leaving NY now, it is not because it is far. It is because of some other factor that Florida may or may not have the same issue in the future.

All kinds of people are moving here, weather, unemployment and price of housing, in the CITY,,, nothing but big crime in PR right now, so expect more influx of folks, it's happening, something in the news not too long ago about the migration to Florida growing again.
