Offshore in the gulf 50 to 120 miles is the only real fishing there is in my book. Nothing like getting 50 mango snaps from 3 to 10lbs in a few hours time.

I'll visit DeSoto and the downtown marina/pier area on a day I go see the Rays play.

thanks again for posting the maps-
Are you using live bait or lures/rubber worms/etc?

Man, I'm jealous, can't wait to be a resident. Our one week visitors fishing license will cost $30 each for my man and I -gulp!

THen add we have to either rent a pole for a week-or buy one we can actually fit in something to fly home?

I use live shrimp almost exclusively.. I like the sign on the Terra Verdi bait store window.
.Our Shrimp are guaranteed to catch fish or die trying..

Chas you dont really need to go 100 miles out in the Gulf to catch lots of fish, any pier or bridge can be (Not always)a productive adventure. heres a buddy of mine pulling in a fair sized Tarpon in the Weedon island area. Using small crabs for bait.

Well i can't sell tarpon. I fished for a living offshore for about 30 years. I grew up fishing the bay but once i tasted offshore fishing for grouper and snapper i never looked back.

As a commercial fisherman you've probably forgotten more about fishing than most of us will ever know in a lifetime . how about some tips and tricks for those merely wanting to spend a few hours locally fishing from a pier and dont have the benefits/resources of a boat with all the electronic fish finder apparatus.

Yeah - this thread is about recreational fishing. Thanks for the youtube video. Fun to watch someone being successful.

You caught my post in the middle of a major edit..
I thought Chas's experiences could be a major source of fishing knowledge, if i were in the area i'd be tempted to give him a call and twist his arm to go fishing..

If you want big fish around 50lbs try to fish the bridges with a half a blue crab for black drum. I used to anchor up under the big bridges when i was a kid with my 14ft boat and catch big drum for kicks.

Most people fish during the heat of the day with the wrong bait and way too big of a sinker and hook and wonder why they don't get anything. Nite fishing is the best during the summer, free line live grunts or the bigger green backs in areas that have good tide flow for snook or use smaller pinfish for trout and redfish.

I could go on and on.

As could I !!!

Another tip.........take the damn "salt life" sticker off of your vehicle......learn how to ACTUALLY catch your targeted species..........then put the stupid sticker back on your vehicle if you want.
