There are three Sweetbays in my area, all within a 5 mile radius - a couple less than a mile away. Never made sense to me to have them so close. I only go in there if I need one or two items. And the times I go in, they're empty (no customers). Not surprised that they're having to shut down/close stores. Pricing seemed much higher than the other grocery stores in the area as well, imo. None of the three stores in my area will be closing, btw.

TAMPA --

Sweetbay has announced plans to close 33 underperforming stores in Florida.

Sweetbay will also close the pharmacy at its Bonita Springs location.

The company plans to close the stores by mid-February.

"While these decisions are difficult, especially given the impact on our associates, customers and communities, these actions will continue to enhance the performance of our overall store portfolio and further enable us to deliver profitable growth and accelerate shareholder value," said Nicole LeBeau, a spokeswoman for Sweetbay.

After these actions are complete, Sweetbay will have 72 stores in Florida.

Seems like all three in our area will be closing.

My biggest turn off there was the people working there, not one has any customer service skills or can smile! Curious what will take its retail space.

To be honest I like Publix way better and the few times I was there I thought they are over priced...Free markets will decide who can survive and who doesn't...

TBO's coverage: layoffs for about 2,000 employees

For pricing overall, Sweetbay is typically in the middle of the pack of five local grocery chains, including Walmart, Publix, Target and Winn-Dixie – with Walmart typically the least expensive and Winn-Dixie the most expensive, according to the Tribune's weekly Market Basket survey.

The Ellenton store is a junior store, used to be Kash N Karry. There is a large Sweetbay 3 miles down the road in Palmetto, never have figured out why Sweetbay kept the Ellenton one open.

No demographic studies before establishing stores? No wonder they have stores going "under" and being closed. Feel bad for the 2,000 employees being laid off.

Feels like it, BucFan. They opened a new store in WC few years back and it was right across the street from SuperTarget and mile or so away from Publix... Go figure... No wonder it's empty all the time...

Perhaps the health care bill influenced the decision too...2000 people less they have to pay health care for, that saves a lot of money and if they barely break even it makes sense to close down.

That "could" be "part" of it. It certainly will be a major player with a lot of businesses. Unintended consequences. It happens all the time when people that don't understand business and economics get to make policy.
