I will hopefully be attending Eckerd College as a Freshman this fall and am curious if anyone has any input. One of the main reasons I chose this school was the lack of Greek Life/Fraternities/Football, etc. I am a pretty low key person and am very opposed to cliques. My ideal friend is introverted, intelligent and highly aware. The aesthetics of the area is great but I know that's not the only thing that's important. For anyone that has attended here/is familiar with it, what are some things I should be informed of before attending? Thanks.

Hey so I'm an EC senior and the lack of Greek life is great because our dorms have themes like Pet dorm, Green dorm, community service dorm, health and wellness, etc. so it's easy to build community with the people you live with. The people here are diverse in the topics we talk about, who we hang with, and what we do in our spare time; you never just stick to the same people. There are low key events you can attend like forums (service learning dine and discuss) or art gallery showings or musical ensemble performance and high energy events like rugby games, and parties. There's plenty of space to just walk around to be alone with your thoughts (188 acres) and always opportunities to meet new people.

Here's something vitally important. Because Eckerd is a small school, when you meet an Eckerd alum there is a camaraderie that alum of larger schools have, but to a greater degree. I have my career due to Eckerd connections. We got great deals on new cars from Eckerd connections. Financial advisor, insurance, clients of mine, , all due to the Eckerd network.

You don't have frats, but you have a close connection because the school is so small, and regardless of what clique you're in, you share and relate experiences.

The other major, major important thing is.... the fishing on campus is off the hook, literally. Snook, reds, trout, flounder, tarpon, grouper...

Sounds like a great fit for me.
I recently received my app info and I've been waitlisted... Is there anything specifically I can do to secure a spot? I want to go here very, very, badly.

That I don't know. It's been a few years since I was there. Hope it does work out for you.

There is this
College Wait List - How to Get Off a College Wait List

but sounds like last years class 4 out of 84 or 4.7% of people waitlisted were enrolled.

I'm not trying to be a Debbie-downer here, but at $36,000 per year I cannot understand why anyone would choose to attend Eckerd and rack up nearly $150,000 in student loan debt in order to get an undergraduate degree. The same degree could be had from a more widely recognized and reputable University for a fraction of that.

My advice, get over the Greeks and enroll at a major University. Learning to deal with a variety of people is as valuable a part of the collegiate experience as the classes you enroll in. Those social skills are likely to get you further along in the workplace than the diploma.

I applaud you for choosing to pursue higher education, on the other hand I see no reason why you would intentionally choose to enter a challenging workforce saddled in debts you may never be able to repay.

36k a year is awful for the quality of school. If you have the money that is great but if you are taking out loans that is a terrible choice. You can easily avoid "greek" life at bigger schools. There are clubs and organizations for every interest possible.

How did this work out for you? Did you get in? How was the first year? My son is looking at Eckerd for Fall 2015.
