That's really not surprising and one of the reasons why I came here. I didn't want to live in/near a huge city. Too many bad things (crime, dense traffic) come with metropolitan areas - if you like that, move there.

Tampa/STP have cultural events, major league sports events (NHL, PGA, NBA, MLB, NASCAR and NBA relatively close by, a great airport, beautiful weather), a major university.

Why the constant complaints by people who can move away is beyond me.

Probably a NYC writer.

I'm not sure how 350K is considered "small" or considering the Tampa Bay metro is the 18th largest in the US. I'm not suggesting the term "large" should be used, but perhaps "medium"? "Small" does seem like an odd choice and a bit of a backhanded comment.

It depends on what your looking at for criteria. In total population, I'd say Tampa is a medium size city. If your looking at density, Tampa is about the same as most suburbs.

This area really changes when snowbirds leave. Even many cultural events (Broadway series) (symphony) take sabbaticals until people return to the area.

Why are Tampans so sensitive? Metro area does not equal city. Tampa is a small city. It barley breaks the top 50 in the US (Nevermind world wide).

Relax. It's not a "slam" to call Tampa a small city.

It probably has to do with the City of Tampa being the 53rd most populated city in the United States, behind such bustling cities as Bakersfield, CA (52), Arlington, TX (50), Tulsa, OK (46), Omaha, NE (43), Mesa, AZ (38), Albuquerque, NM (32), ect, ect..

One thing to keep in mind, is that it's all relative to what you are comparing it to. Whether that be; population, land area, density, etc. Jacksonville for example, is the 12th largest city in the US, by population, but also has one of the largest land areas and subsequently has one of the lowest densities as well. So that being said, is Jacksonville a "large" city? No, not in my opinion, because you have to take into account all of the other factors.

However, no matter which way you try to spin the numbers, Tampa will never be considered a "large" city, and realistically it's probably a small-medium sized city in the grand scheme of things. And at the end of the day, it's all relative to what you are comparing it to.

Don't look at just the size of the city. Look at the size of the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Jacksonville is the largest city in Florida, but it's the 4th largest MSA.
