Default Thinking about moving to Tampa

I currently live in Baltimore, MD and am thinking about relocating to Tampa. No true reasons besides the fact that I love warm weather and want a change of pace. I'm soon to be 24 years old and would love anyone's opinions who has recently moved or are my age and living in the Tampa area.

I also am currently looking for a job. I work in the advertising/marketing field and am finding it difficult to find an agency that compares to the one I am in now. If anyone knows of anyone who is looking to hire, please let me know!!

Thanks so much and I look forward to any feedback!!!

The Tampa area is great. The pay scale may not be the same but when you take into account no state taxes it's okay. There is also an area just north of Tampa that is extremely affordable and great for a first time buyer. The is an expressway called the Suncoast that brings you right into downtown Tampa. Traffic is also better than Baltimore. I couldn't deal with the traffic there that's why I didn't move to Baltimore when me other half wanted me to move. They move here instead. Let me know if there is anything i can help you with!

This is the downside of the area. I'd be very surprised if you did find an agency down here that compares with one in the DC area. The employment situation is the reason why I'm currently looking to do the same trip as you....in reverse!

I disagree with the above comment re. pay and taxes. The pay here is so far short of what it is in your area, there is no way having no state tax and cheaper home prices even comes close to making up the defecit. Besides, they get you in other ways - property tax and homeowners insurance being cases in point.

Read this article by Forbes about Tampa being the worst place in the USA for young professionals:

Best Cities For Young Professionals - Forbes.com

Now, that said, I do like the area, but I do feel that my career is passing me by being down here as I scratch from consulting assignment to consulting assignment - often elsewhere in the US as it is.

It depends on your preferences. I am 26 and just moved to Tampa from Chicago for a one-year job. I don't love it here and am definitly heading back to Chicago when this year is up. I have a friend from high school though who moved down here recently who LOVES it!

Your best bet is to go to Miami for something of the sort, the area has a wider advertising/marketing field than here and you may like the night scene better here. I am 25, have been here for 3 years. I am from Miami and I really don't like the area here.

I'm 24 and just moved here a few months ago. Its a fun city and I'd recommend it provided you can find employment. Haven't had much of a chance to experience it yet since I barely know anyone and I'm working a ton. I wouldn't put too much stock in the ranking of cities because it only speaks of average opportunities, and that says nothing about individual opportunities. It might be harder to find a great job here, but for those that do, it isn't like being in Tampa is a bad thing and it could set you up to move elsewhere later in life if you wanted.

Feel free to reply or shoot me a PM if you want more info, I'd be happy to share what I've learned over the last few months.

Hi,

First of all be sure that the reason you want to move is not just for weather! I am from Columbus Ohio and squaked my entire life ( I am now 32) anbout how bad the weather is. I am in the travel industry and so it limits me now down here. South Florida is fun if you like the nightlife/ bar thing and beach. It is also pretty plastic so keep that in mind. I to am looking at relocating to Tampa as well. Let me know what ya find out

Hey,

Jason O, how is it up there? I am 23 and I live in S. FL. No job opportunities if you aren't tri-lingual. What can you tell me? A HUGE lack of young urban professionals.....does Tampa have it?

Hard for me to respond - I'm a grad student in allied health, and what with the abundance of hospitals and Moffitt (which is an entity unto itself), there are seemingly endless opportunities for me and though its a bit early to say, I think I'm really able to set myself up well for the rest of my career here.

Haven't met many young urban professionals here, but haven't exactly had time to go looking either, which is a big part of the problem I imagine they are out there, but with just a couple months of time and so much of my life revolving around work, I'm afraid I can't give you a definitive answer.

Here's my take on things, but before you read it you should know that I am cheap...lol!!

I tried to live in the Tampa Bay area 2 different times, once in 2004 and again in 2006. Both times I went down I moved back up north after 6 months. Cost of living is out of hand, forget trying to rent something in a "decent" area for under $700/month. Decent area meaning nothing near the water and hopefully you won't live down the street from a drug house or gang member. Car insurance is through the roof. I have a 4 year Business Management degree and still couldn't find a job that paid over $25,000. Up north I made $50,000 doing the same job that pays $25,000 down there. Traffic on the Pinellas side (St Pete/Clearwater) is a nightmare. The weather is beautiful from November to April, but that is about it. I'd try North or South Carolina for better jobs and more reasonable cost of living along with decent weather. Good luck!
