I am looking for general advice of the area and what to expect relocating to the tampa bay area. i have two young kids, i work in the medical field and am looking to start out in a 3 bedroom appartment. I don't want to spend over 1000$ in rent, and its needs to be 45 min commuting distance to hospitals in the area. open to sarasota to the clearwater area and anywhere in-between.

What are some family friendly appartment complexes to check out? Areas to stay out of?

Thanks for any help!

That's a wide swath of area, but just my 2 cents...$1000 for 3 bedroom apt. isn't going to get you into the greatest of neighborhoods. There's areas in each city from Clearwater to Sarasota that you'll want to stay away from, but crossing off entire zip codes isn't realistic. Have you had or will you have time to visit the area? You might try the Seminole area, it's pretty safe, not sure how many apartment complexes there are. I'd stay out of the better portion of South St. Pete, especially in the price point you're looking at. And that goes for most of Largo as well. Have you considered renting a house instead? The real estate market here is starting to move, so I'm not sure what kind of prices you'd be seeing for a 3 bedroom, maybe a real estate agent here would know, if that's something you'd want that is.

Thanks for the "2 cents"! we are coming for a week to visit the area in a couple weeks. IT might be worth it to meet with a real estate agent to look at houses for rent, rather than appartments. Thanks again.

Well since you're visiting, I'd definitely recommend looking around Seminole, the Northern portion of Clearwater, Safety Harbor, maybe some of the Pinellas Park/St Pete area. Some of those places will be better for home rentals than apartments, but I think they are all relatively safe. I know nothing of Sarasota, so I can't help there.

To get an idea of what kind of homes you can rent for 1000 or less, please take a look at realtor.com and search RENTALS. There is a huge difference in what kind of home and what location you can rent a home for 1000 vs 1400 (100 dollars a week).

Right now based on what you asked about, I would think Zephyrhills or Plant City and your commute would be 45 minutes plus and that doesn't put you all that close to major medical areas.

How about this:
1000 for rent, but have to drive much further. Say 2.5 gallons of gas each way `10.00 each way/20.00 per pay

Live closer, spend 1 gallon of gas each way or 2 per day `8.00 per day (savings of 12 per day or 60 per week).

Take 60 per week X 4 weeks a month = save 240.00 per month.

Spend 1240 per month on rent, get a nice townhome in 33647 zip code, be within 10-15 miles/20-30 minutes of A LOT OF MAJOR MEDICAL JOBS (USF/VA/Florida Medical) at the intersection of Fletcher and Bruce B. Downs.

Just a suggestion.

The OP won't find anything in Safety Harbor for $1000 per month.

Why would an apartment be more than a house?

$1000 per month will put you in areas with crappy schools, and crappy crowds.

I seriously doubt you can find anything in Safety Harbor for rent for under $1000, apartment or otherwise. Sorry. It's a great community, but it is expensive to live there.
