Just wondering if anyone uses the commissary at MacDill. Living in Land O Lakes I am trying to figure out if it is going to be worth my drive to go once a month and pile up on my meats and such. I have always lived close enough to use the commissary and other base amenities. The price of meat alone has always been a huge savings.

food is very competitive here, coupons galore and dollar stores etc,, you can save alot by shopping the sales, I do not know about meat prices,, only thing I ever got at commissary was baby formula.

I grabbed the Sunday paper last weekend hoping for lots of coupons and was surprised there werent many at all. Just a lot of sales ads. Is there another paper that has more coupons? I am going to have to start printing them online thats for sure. I did find some great sales on chicken and pork chop steaks at winn dixie the other day. Buy one get one free is always a good deal I guess I got spoiled because of the prices at the commissarys where we were stationed.

We did get the Sams Club membership and I did check out the meats there. Pretty decent prices but not as cheap as the commissary was. I have to go to NC to get my car this weekend so maybe the following weekend Ill drive down and check it out.

I rarely use it. I live about 45 minutes away and sometimes will stop by and pick up stuff after golfing all day at one of MacDill's courses. You save on prices and no tax, but paying the bagger makes up for some of that. They do have a pretty nice commissary, imo. I like their international (German) stuff that they carry.

I live in Land O Lakes and hit the Commissary only once a month. The Commissary has taken numerous financial hits over the years and it really is too bad. It was one of the great benefits for Our Military and Veterans at a time. There are still things we buy there to last us through the month, but Publix beats or matches them pretty much on what we use daily.

There are great articles out there about Congress voting to reduce Commissary benefits because they simply don't understand why it is there. Why? Because they never have served. When 60% or more of your base qualifies for Federal Food Stamps because they make so darn little money (E-1 to E-5) and are forced to live in major metropolitan areas, they deserve a break on their food at the minimum.

Before anyone chimes in and bashes the Military Person, please save your time. I witnessed first hand what these young families go through and it is sad.

Anytime I visit MacDill Commissary, there are more retired vets in there compared to active duty members. I think a lot of these vets (coupons in hand) need the reduced cost.

I find the BX (PX in Army terms) way too expensive - especially clothing. No discounts there.

For me, the cost of gas, toll-way fee (via Selmon Expressway) really takes away any cost benefit unless I'm already there for golf or pharmacy medications.
