Plan on making that a two day trip easily. My husband and I drove many times from NJ to Tampa when we were planning our move here and to sum it up, it stinks. I won't make that drive anymore, it's just too long. But the good news is that it only started to stink after about the 4th trip so you have a ways to go.
Oh, and by the way, it is always backed up on 95 around DC for no apparent reason.

I'd also recommend making it a two day trip, especially with the little one's. A good spot to stop would be around the NC/SC border.
The DC rush hour consists mostly of travelling north to south from about 3:00pm-7:00pm, and travelling south to north 6:00am-10:00am. I'd avoid 95 by all means at those times.

We are doing this drive in a week and a half. We are taking three days to help break it up for ourselves and the kids.

I've done this before and don't envy you. Some people I've known will drive at night so the kids sleep.

Best of luck for you. There isn't much advice for the baby, however, just pack a lot of toys to entertain your 3 year old. As someone suggested, leaving at night around bedtime (as long as you can safely stay awake!) would be good so that they can sleep. Otherwise, just make it fun for the 3 year old. Play games, have movies, toys, etc.

If you can stay awake--drive at night. less traffic. In my experience, my kids seemed to fall asleep as soon as we left the driveway. just something about that car ride that did it. get a mini DVD player, and lots of movies. it helps.
