there is no real way to detect whether your property will be susceptible to a sink hole. Sink holes develop over hundreds if not thousands of years and when you buy a home here you are literally rolling the dice, in regards to many things. But thats florida, the odds are your home wont be engulfed into the earths core but you truly never know. Floods will be a part of life in certain areas, like south tampa. If a cat 4 or 5 hurricane ever hit tampa from the right angle we would be looking at Katrina New Orleans type devestation if not worse. Even bigger concerns should be the horrifying job market, awful local economy and noticeable brain drain as the areas intelligent, educated youth flock away to find opportunity elsewhere.

Your post is spot on and excellent input. You are only off on the last sentence according to the professional data, which has been provided many times over.

Wow PriusH8r .... good info. I did not realize Tampa is sitting on such a huge time bomb! No wonder insurances is such expensive here.

I am getting more inclined not to move to Tampa after all.

Bad schools system (FL generally) hence more expensive home in limited good public schools (K1 ~ K12), Flooding, SinkHoles, much higher insurance bills ...

Yes, it sounds as if this is not the place for you, definitely. Definitely.

For those of you that lives in Hernando County. This map is updated through 2013. The map works best if you use firefox as your browser.

Hurricanes too. I would say there are more things that "could" happen to you here, but not very likely....especially if you pick the proper areas. Some areas are more prone to sinkholes than others, some schools are extremely good (Palm Harbor for example), the Tampa Bay area is positioned where it is much less likely to receive a direct hit from a hurricane.

However, if you are so nervous over everything that "could" happen, then I agree that Florida is not for you. Every person has their comfort level. Seek yours out and plan accordingly. Best of luck going forward.

Is "kmarc" or "marc" a typical Tampa person who just squirm every time he could not handle some facts he dislike? Is this why there is a mis-conception that Tampa get its bad name of people due to kmarc? But so far for my short trip in Tampa people were nice to me. Hope this kmarc guy is an exception.

Funny there are people who never grow up, at least their mind is closed and thinking like 1-way street. To improve yourself in any way, 1st thing is to admit there is an issue, or imperfection. Unless you claim yourself as god. You know, like those "TransplantBarian" who likes to sleep with Tiger and Bears. LOL!!!

Everywhere has its own problems. But the more I look into Tampa as a great place to live, the more problems I am seeing. Mind you, I did not start out looking for issues, but bad national headlines just keep popping up.

Don't believe me?
1) Tampa tops Weather.com list of U.S. cities most vulnerable and overdue for a hurricane | Tampa Bay Times Key here is "most vulnerable".

2) Line of sinkholes could be sign of more to come | Tampa Bay Times

3) Another CNN headline today
Opinion: Florida, fix sinkhole policy - CNN.com

You can claim higher chance to of strike by lightning, but that kind of talk does not help in comparison between cities.

Drywall issue did occur in some states around the country but Florida suffered the most cases.

Tampa, and other parts of Florida, have had bad national headlines over the years. I highly recommend that people heed them. This is not a good place to live, it's everything you say it is. There are much better places to live.
