Have you noticed how every special interest group wants THEIR special interest included on the pier?

- restaurant/bar owners
- bicyclists
- runners
- fans of marine life
- theater-goers who want a stage
- etc

By the time we get to the activists who want to add sleeping pods for the homeless, it's going to be a $100 million version of "The Homer" car.

No one has explained why we need to waste this money -- the downtown area is absolutely white-hot right now, pier or no pier. If it is such a necessity to revitalize the city, maybe Tampa should build one (or more).

It's election day as St. Petersburg voters hit the polls today to decide on a mayor, some city council seats, and whether to replace the iconic Pier with the controversial Lens.

Yes or no: Should St. Pete voters approve Lens plan? | Breaking Tampa Bay, Florida and national news and weather from Tampa Bay Online and The Tampa Tribune | TBO.com

hopefully they vote YES - to replace it. I love the lens idea. Much better than a bunch of tacky gift shops.

i was shocked to see the ugly & tacky inverted pyramid included on this list:

Top 10 Piers - Coastal Living

perhaps what they need to do is just tear down the pyramid and build another pier that has the same sort of attractions but a more updated design

the Lens is not that

one of the problems with the inverted pyramid is that it was never maintained very well (inside and out), that accelerated its demise; the santa monica pier is the best pier in the country, IMHO, and it's 100 years old!!!! i don't understand why the inverted pyramid is rotting itself into the bay when the santa monica pier, battered by decades of the violent pacific ocean, is still perfectly fine!!!

seems to me like the Californians know exactly what to do with a pier, how to design it, how to maintain it, they know exactly what their people want; the Lens architect, funnily from LA, has no clue what St. Pete people want
