Default TAMPA ghetto?

What areas should I avoid in Tampa?.....I'm just asking because last time i went i took a wrong turn somewhere but i don't even know what the name of the road was....it was an exit i took off of I-4 somewhere after the Brandon exit and i was coming from Orlando....Are there bad areas on each side of town....or is it all in one area or is there bad areas in all the suburbs?

Thank you,

I rarely venture into areas such as East Tampa(just east of Ybor City and also just north of Ybor City), or the area around Fowler and Fletcher Aves, East of I-275 to 30th/Bruce B Downs(west of USF campus). Drew Park is another non-desirable area(between MLK and Hillsborough Aves, west of Dale Mabry Hwy), unless you like the 'adult' types of establishments. Hillsborugh Ave east of I-275 can be a little less desirable for me as well.

I would tell you if you are coming over during the daytime hours you should be fine in the areas listed above by Tampaguy.
You probably were on east Hillsborough, again it is not that bad as long as you stay on the main road but I wouldn't stop any place on that stretch. Daytime is of course safer than night time.

What area are you going to? We can give you better info if we know where you are headed.

I agree with both Tampaguy and Keeper - the areas mentioned by Tampaguy are not very nice, but I am not afraid to go anywhere in those areas in the daytime and have done so many times in the past. I WOULD avoid them at night, however.

I noticed that all of the areas that you mentioned are predominately black neighborhoods in Tampa. What makes you feel unsafe in those areas? I am white and I have been in most of those neighborhoods and have never had a single problem. There are bad areas all over Tampa, and black neighborhood or not I would probably not walk alone out there at night if it is a bad area. I am just curious as to why people have this assumption that just because a neighboorhood is mostly black, that it is unsafe? Have you been a victim of a crime in one of these neighborhoods with a story to back up what you are saying? My ex used to live in one neighborhood you mentioned, near hillsborough and nebraska east of I 275. I never had a single problem in this neighboorhood....

Well I really wasn't planning anything as of yet, but i do like the beaches on that side of the state better than the east coast and when i go over there to beaches i sometimes like driving through Tampa to see another city.....I am not too familiar with Tampa, but have been to Ybor one time and drove through a couple times but I was thinking of maybe going to the Hard Rock casino over there sometime in the next couple months and then going to Ybor after that or maybe the beach....who knows what time of year it will be...but i was just asking this question about the bad areas just so i don't get on the wrong side of town again.....Thanks for the reply...and thank everyone else for replying too

Maybe you should read crime statistics:

Crime Tracker - from TBO.com

You can search any address, any area.

I think it's all relative. Being from Chicago, I have driven through/gone to places in the Tampa "ghettos" and have never felt unsafe. These might be relatively higher crime for Tampa (I don't know, I'm assuming that's why people are suggesting these as the bad areas), but they aren't bad compared to what you would traditionally think of as "ghettos" in large cities.

Which areas are non-black that are ghetto over there?.....I am from Miami and it is possible to have other areas than black areas as the ghetto.....In Miami there are areas where it's mainly hispanic and it's ghetto and then there are other areas where its mostly Haitian that are ghetto....but are there any white or hispanic or other ghetto areas that aren't perdominatly black over there in Tampa?

Actually go to any run down trailer park and usually you will find the white ghetto. Unless it is a retirement community, these areas usually have the same drugs, domestic disputes and assaults and violent crime that any other ghetto would. People seem to ignore that. Another thing people seem to forget, most violent crimes are not random acts. In most cases they are domestic crimes, or drug related. When is the last time you have heard of someone being the random victim of a crime just passing through an "unsafe area". It usually doesn't happen that way. When I watch the news at night, the mugshots I see seem to be in line with the demographics of Tampa (50% white, 30% black, the rest is other races). Don't get me wrong here folks, I know Tampa has rougher areas. I am simply questioning why only the black neighborhoods are being mentioned as Tampa's bad areas. Lets not be ignorant.
