Yikes, that's pretty eye opening.

The population was much smaller back then also.

Crime has been going down in all cities across America for decades now. We are becoming a safer nation. One of the more funny ones is when older people talk about how FEROCIOUSLY DANGEROUS New york City is.

New York City, with it's homicide rate of 8 per 100,000 people annually, is not just much safer than it was back in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s (annual homicide rating between 30-40 per 100,000 annually), but today it is one of the safest cities in the whole world. Even the dreaded Chicago has a homicide rate less than half of what it was decades ago.

It's kind of a perfect storm, not only here in the Tampa Bay but elsewhere. The increased median age of our population means a shrinking criminal demographic. Crime is usually a rational act, and the risks for criminals are higher now than they've ever been. "Digital witnesses" in the form of security cameras and bystanders with camera phones have nearly reached total saturation. It's an incredible challenge to commit a crime that doesn't risk exposure to some manner of digital witness.

The 40 year period of reduced criminal activity in the United States owes its existence to Roe v. Wade and social programs that extend a support system to the recently unemployed. On top of that, human technological evolution has increased the risk barriers to criminal activity especially over the last decade.

We are probably at a "safety plateau" of sorts, however. And we may start to pull back from this peak if income inequality continues to grow and wage rates continue to lag behind inflation and per-capita-proportionate corporate profit. There's the other side of the technological evolution too-- that many low-wage jobs will be replaced by automated systems in the years to come.

I am sorry, is there a problem with that? I think those numbers are quite high still! (JMO Of course)

Maybe people learned how to communicate instead of using weapons to communicate like cave men(and women).

I wonder if the stats are being calculated the same way, plenty of investigations done in the big cities about how police departments are manipulating stats.

It's because the big city crime has come to the more rural areas, or so I've read.

It could also be that people love cats and popcorn. And other constant factors that have been around for decades and have no plausible connection to the lowered crime rate.

Could be. I was being a little sarcastic with my post, although it could actually be a small part. Who knows?
