Depends on exactly where.. Some areas are not bad, others are iffy.

Are you looking for a house or apt? How close is it to Interbay?

I have relatives that live near Himes south of Gandy. most of the homes are older, small homes but they have had no problems. I have a SIL who lives on Himes just north of Gandy and they have never had any problems.

It is not too far from Hyde Park, I hesitate to say exactly but around 3 miles..

Hopefully Tampaguy will be able to give you some more info since he lives in S. Tampa.

Keeper, I think you're pretty close in stating that it's about 3 miles from Hyde Park; I often think in terms of the length of Bayshore Blvd, which is about 5 miles end to end, and relate distances in relation to that. So maybe it's a little further......

The neighborhoods south of Gandy are more modest, generally speaking. There has been an incroachment of larger, newer, more up-scale homes making it's way from the Ballast Point area westward, including some on Paxton and Cherokee Streets west of MacDill, but I don't know how long that building boom will continue in light of the declining housing market. Also, the Westshore Blvd area south of Gandy has developed quite a bit in the last 6 or 7 years.

I think few of us in south Tampa would disagree that there is a big departure in the prices and quality of homes when you travel south of Gandy and for the most part that holds true all the way south to the air force base.

I meant to put you into the mix of things Tony, I know you live there too.

It really depends on how much you want to spend either for a house or apt. Tony is right about the houses. Many are over 40 years old and very small in comparision to the newer homes being built.

The area just south of ballast point before you get to macdill afb is very nice, i bike down there often, taking bayshore all the way to ballast point park and pier, and continuing down to the base from bayshore blvd. East of MacDill Ave is very nice and also very expensive, many newer homes with older condos/townehomes in the mix. There is a great Italian place, Cellini's, by the way, and check out the Interbay Meat Market and Genghis Khan Mediteranean retaurant..YUM!

Hyde Park is less than 10 minutes taking MacDill Ave north to Morrison or Swann Ave or Bayhsore Blvd north to Howard Avenue.
