You all have no idea how much I appreciate your input. It's great to get advice from others who were in my shoes at one point. I have definitely decided to look at cheaper places. No more than $850 (ideally around $800).

I agree with 25% max on rent, especially if you plan on eventually buying. You'll need the extra cash flow to save for a down payment.

When you pay more than 30% of your income on rent, you are considered "rent burdened" by government definition. I would suggest going by that guideline as to what your rent budget should be.
