What about the many money begging sex offenders that are home less...I wish people wouldn't give money but food instead since that will eliminate the beggars and perhaps will get them to do something else instead.

Many if the people on the street corners are sex offenders and many people don't realize that. Whatever is on the sign doesn't mean it is true statement.

Looks like the Tampa Bay area is rife with sex offenders, maybe not the best place to move if you are worried about such issues..

They live everywhere and most don't even know it because they have not been caught yet. Any statistic is skewed because it only counts those who have been caught and convicted which always gives a false sense of security when looking for a home to purchase.

sex offenders is a broad term that encompasses a lot of people that probably don't deserve it. For example, if you have an 18 year old male, who dates a 17 year old female, technically that makes him a sexual offender, since she is underage.

A more telling fact would be the number of sexual PREDATORS in your neighborhood.

I agree that people like in the example of a different poster should not be incl. but most sex offenders are not in that category.

California and Florida seem to have most see offenders due to the nice weather and many can stay outdoors most of the year and as long as people believe every word they lie about on a sign and give them money then more and more will come over here. Many make more than minimum wage with less hours to stand outside for it.

They don't pay taxes and don't contribute to society. I feel sorry for the real people in need who don't have criminal backgrounds and who now are hard to determine who they are since so many on these corners are criminals and/or are alcoholics or drug addicts.

We hear stories that some people scam money by portraying themselves as homeless but that's likely rare and I'd rather that person work a corner than as a bankster. If I feel like giving a dollar, I don't concern myself with how that person might use the dollar. Their life is not mine to live for them.

As to "many...people on the street corners are sex offenders....": I'm looking for stats to affirm or deny that. Laws prevent offenders from living within restricted zones, landlords deny access to housing and employment is also often denied so poverty is a problem. But as I presume more people in the general population are not sex offenders, then I would presume that even if there is some percentage chance of the homeless more so being an offender, I'd require stats to believe the rates are much higher than the general population which makes me doubt that "many...are offenders." Show me stats proving otherwise and I'd easily change my opinion on that.

Just a quick google of stats show there to be 750,000 known offenders in the USA so with a population of 313 million, that's a ratio of 417 to 1.

Stats show that the Tampa Bay offender population is lower than the national average:

The ratio of number of residents in Pasco County to the number of sex offenders is 451 to 1
The ratio of number of residents in Hillsborough County to the number of sex offenders is 544 to 1
The ratio of number of residents in Pinellas County to the number of sex offenders is 547 to 1

Arguing skewed stats is silly because if they are skewed in one place then likely also in another and so therefore one relative to the other still shows what one place is relative to another with regard to the known numbers, assuming similar margins of error.

Even if some aren't caught, again, the stats are still relevant because there would likely be similar margins of error in any location. So the stats are telling nonetheless.

But I've no doubt that non-reporting is a problem. Part of that problem I suspect is that people are embarrassed by their own sexuality such that they are shy about reporting. And there even are institutions in the world, religious ones at that, working against the safety of victims both by making them feel guilty about their own sexuality and by protecting offenders. For instance:

Italy bishops say they don?t have to report abuse - The Japan News
ROME (AP)—Italy’s bishops have adopted a Vatican-backed sex abuse policy that says they have no obligation to inform police if they suspect a child has been molested.

Being homeless is not an offense. Sexual offending is an offense. One is not the other.

They might not be homeless if places like Fla. didn't have rediculous residency restrictions. Residency restrictions have actually been shown to be useless but yet people still want them...it just makes people homeless and harder to keep track of, and keeps them from getting jobs where they could be productive
