That's funny because every day i hear more and more stories about veterans becoming homeless after they get back, and many employers don't want to work around there obligations with the reserves and since soldiers are highly prone to mental illness they also factor that in for a reason not to employ them. Military is not good for vocational career seeking, it's mostly if you want to do careers in criminal justice. I know that was my major but i'm not so sure in a career field in it. The fact that I am down on my luck and have a ****ty life because I have no one to help me at all does not define my character.

I retired after 26 years from the Military a not to short while ago. Your comments about Our Military clearly show you have no clue. Don't go down that road and please don't enlist.

I don't see WHAT'S FUNNY about Veterans coming home with issues. Yes, more than a few have mental issues but hundreds of thousands don't

I can tell you for certain, that there are a ton of different jobs out there that people learn the skill while serving that provide great opportunities on the outside even after a 4 year enlistment.

Anywhere from a Cook, Electrician, Air Traffic Controller, Weatherman, Equal Opportunity Specialist, Human Resource Specialist, Counselor, Secretary, Executive Assistant, yes - even a cop and I could go on and on.

Your last sentence to me says it all - .... no one to help me. HELP YOURSELF

I live with cruel parents and that is the reason why I want to leave so fast and don't have time to make money. It's hard for me to hold a job here, I wouldn't say I'm a bad worker, but being so depressed all the time here makes it had for me to stay motivated long enough to work. I don't care where I have to get my start I just know that as soon as i move i'll do nothing but go straight up.
Syfer, I'm in agreement with Sunshine on this and I'd like to point out that one thing that comes through in your posts is that you are both intelligent and extremely literate, you definitely know how to write and express yourself. That's a huge plus.

And I think you're absolutely right that once you move out of an environment (and the people in it) that is holding you down, you'll do much better. In fact a change of environment has done wonders for people, all of a sudden their luck dramatically changes.

I don't know if you checked back in the other thread, the one about the cheapest places to move right now, but one poster suggested that Key West has a shelter where people can stay for free until they get on their feet. I wouldn't normally recommend Key West, but then it occurred to me that you can probably get work on one of the boats or ships and maybe see a little bit of the Caribbean or something. Plus you don't need a car to get around in Key West. It's a funky place, it is expensive to live there, but something might turn up.

I liked the thought of keywest, but I assumed it would be cheaper to go to Miami then it would be there.(Allthough I do love the sound of a simple tropical living and still being near a dense population.) I don't really want to burden shelters since i am not really a resident, I am just hoping to go by your first suggestion and find weekly motel and hopefully find something comfortable near a bus also, key west would require extra transportation and i'm very tight on money obviously. Maybe people are right and i am making excuses and being lazy, I pretty much have to just chose between the potential life I want and the comfort of my bed haha

Apply for social security and use the Ticket to Work Program to get the training you will need to get any where in your life.

Just went out to run an errand and thought of an idea for you, but you have to move fast on this, because it's getting close to the official beginning of summer, which is Memorial Day. Now, I've been out of the loop on this for a couple of decades, but it used to be that there were some summer resorts and hotels that would hire young people like college students and even folks a year or so out of college to work for the summer waiting and busing tables, cooking, cleaning, leading activities, all sorts of stuff. And they'd provide room and board, usually dormitory style or shared rooms and such and some pay. Plus tips. You'd have to do your own online searching for this, I don't have the time to spoon feed it to you, but use google and search terms like "summer resort jobs for students room and board" or some such thing. Technically, you're still a student.

I don't know if places like that still exist, I do know that when I was a student spending my summers working on Cape Cod, there were a couple of places that used to bring young people in from Ireland to work for the summer. And the movie "Dirty Dancing" was about some young folks who worked at a summer resort in the Catskills or Adirondacks or whatever.

Anyway, I figure since it's almost summer, you might be able to get one of those gigs, even by applying online. If jobs like that still exist, they'll be in the mountains, seashore and Great Lakes resort areas. Anyway, get one of those jobs for the summer if you can. You'd have to get yourself there, but it gets you away from your lousy environment and your room and board is taken care of. You won't need a car. Save what money you can. Heck, once you're into the job, even if it's lousy work like doing clean up, you can stop by the office and let them know about your clerical skills and you'd be happy to stand in when one of the office people are out sick or off for a day. When summer's over, you'll have some references, some money saved and can migrate down to Florida or wherever.

Here's a place, for example. Northern Vermont. Looks really nice, too. So there are places, you'll have to move fast like I said. Many of these jobs may be filled, but there are always people who don't show up or drop out, so get on a waiting list if you have to. Don't just apply to one, apply to a whole bunch of them. Whatever you can find.

I think the OP meant funny-odd, not funny ha-ha.

And, I personally have heard a couple of small business employers express the opinion that they're afraid to employ a vet these days in case some issue should arise. Mind you, I don't agree and these two fellows were jerks anyway, in fact I'd use a stronger word to describe these guys if it weren't banned, but the perception is out there, unfortunately. The Armed Forces has a bit of a public relations problem these days for a number of reasons. Somebody needs to clean that up.

With that said, I re-entered the workplace a few years ago after having been out of it for a while and for someone who is a bit older, the "new" workplace is generally pretty freaky compared to what it used to be. I'd be more comfortable surrounded by vets than some of the civilians I've worked with. It was a relief to find telecommute work, I can tell you.

Reading through one of the newsletters I subscribe to, I read a brief article on the prediction of a growing market that is only going to continue to need more and more skilled workers and I thought of the OP's background.

OP, you said your background is criminal justice. That doesn't just mean guard duty or police-type work. I don't know how strong your aptitude is in computers but you did mention you got a certificate (or something similar) in MS Office. Marry those two and see if you can get your foot in the door with an agency who could possibly place you in a clerical level job at a company who applies cyber security to their every day functions. Trust me, this field is going to explode. As the article I've copied below states, it's not something that anyone can technically learn in school, it's more of a skill that you either have the intuition for or not and you then hone in on that. Cyber crime in all shapes and sizes are cripling every type of business so now's the time to get in at the bottom and work your way up.

That is, IF this is something that interests you.

"Why the Security Talent Gap Is the Next Big Crisis -The sophistication and frequency of cybercrime is overwhelming manyorganizations There is an IT security skills shortagethat’s occurring right as the volume and sophistication of cyber and physicalattacks continues to rise. The sophistication of the technology and tacticsused by online criminals – and their nonstop attempts to breach networksecurity and steal data – have outstripped the ability of IT and securityprofessionals to address threats. Most organizations do not have the people orthe systems to monitor their networks consistently and to determine how theyare being infiltrated. The battle means that companies might be in danger oflosing simply because they lack the manpower to deal with it. The battle meansthat companies looking for more security staff aren’t going to find them –they’re going to have to create them. (Source securitymagazine.com)"

Thanks for all your info guys, I am just really desperate to leave because I feel like I have lost out on so much of life being trapped in the middle of nowhere. It bothers me so much every day that every second I am thinking about leaving, that is why it is so urgent, and I want to go so far away. I saw that NYC will ship homeless people back to where they need to go, maybe I can hit the streets and ask for a free flight to los angeles >.<
