Hi , we are thinking to move from TX to St Pete, FL this year. We love the laid back life and the ocean. I am a certified dog trainer and I would like to open a doggie training day school and boarding. I noticed that only couple of business are doing similar thing, and that St Pete does not have many certified and experienced trainers in the area. Is St Pete pet friendly, and what about economy? I am not sure that this business would be in demand like it is here in TX? What areas would be good for business like this one?
Thank you!!

Just a guess but i'm sure zoning regulations would prohibit such a venture in St Pete as the whole area is residential and would not be tolerant of a business that involves dozens of noisy dogs..

I think opening one on the other side the bay might be better - closer to Brandon, Wesley Chapel. Young (single) professionals like to get their first dogs and need help training - as well as boarding when they go on business trips..... I do notice a lot of single folks walking their dogs downtown. I'm assuming many live right there downtown Tampa. A place relatively nearby (Brandon) might be in demand.

We had a Dog Trainer for our young German Sheppard that came directly out to the house. I felt it was very costly, but the wife over ruled me.

I believe it could make some money as the boarding side seems to be in demand from the people I know.

As mentioned, not sure if that location would allow it. Maybe North on HWY 19 may be an option as well.

It all depends on how many are doing this and how profitable they are.
You could ask the St. Pete Business assistance center for help and assistance. They help small business with SCORE mentors and it's free.

You also may wish to network with some local rescue organizations with similar-minded folks who I'm sure would have some valuable input and resources:

St. Francis Society Animal Rescue - non-profit cat & dog rescue and adoption in Tampa Bay Florida
Domains Made Simple
Guardian Angel Dog Rescue
New Horizon Dog Rescue 727-894-6805 or 813-930-5553
