An Army paratrooper from Ruskin has been killed in action in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said Thursday that Army Sgt. 1st Class Matthew I. Leggett died during combat in Kabul on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old was assigned to the headquarters battalion of the 18th Airborne Corps.

No other details were provided about where or how Leggett was killed.

Leggett enlisted in the Army in May 1995 and had been based at Fort Bragg since 2012. He served three combat tours and was the recipient of numerous awards and decorations, including a Bronze Star Medal with one oak leaf cluster and a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat.

He is survived by his parents, Thea Marie Kurtz and Thomas Leggett.

What a shame. Pass gently, Sgt. Leggett.

Yet another reason to have never been there and to not be there now.

Not really the time/place to discuss this, imo. I think there are other forums on CDF to post your opinion on the merits of fighting the wars. Just saddened that we've lost another Soldier. Just another reason to thank a member of the military when you see them. Any of them can suffer the greatest sacrifice whenever they deploy to the warzones.

This is not the place to be discussing whether we should or should not be there. Have some tact, someone lost their life for our freedom.

Just sad ? Rather than being Sad, write to your congressman or congresswoman so they can stop Soldiers from being deployed beyond our borders other wise its a just a hollow sadness...

When you sign up as a Solider, you know death can occur anytime!

I think most decent civilians are dismayed at the way the troops have been treated, and just don't know how they can help. Insist that the First Congressional battalion be deployed first, before any other.

Pretty callous. It is safe to say the majority of Americans aren't as flippant/disrespectful about the death of our Soldiers as you appear.
