We are house/apartment hunting next week and are narrowing down areas to look at.

We have been looking at some apartments on the internet in the Westshore area near the mall that are very close to the airport.

I grew up in Southern California near Orange County airport and the planes there have to take off a special way due to noise regulations in the area so, although you can still hear the planes, it isn't ridiculously noisy.

Does anyone know if the Tampa airport has any kind of similar law in effect? Or does anyone live in that area and can comment on the noise?

We are specifically looking at Modera Westshore and Varela Westshore apartments.

Thank you!

The apartments you are looking at, you will not here any airplane noise at all. The runways align in such a way, that the flightpaths for both departures and landings do not bring the aircraft near/over the Intl. mall area, you may on a rare occasion hear a reverse thrust from a landing aircraft, but that's it.

And yes, TPA does have noise abatement procedures when taking off southward, but this does not apply to you and the area you are looking at.

I've lived in Tampa for so long I don't even notice the airplanes anymore.

You should probably be mindful of the road noise in that area, too. I notice that more than noise from the airplanes.

and if you look at the downtown Tampa area near Channelside, be careful about train crossing noise - sounds like there's a big problem down there.......

Train noise is an issue in Safety Harbor, too. CSX went from daytime crossings to middle-of-the night.

What i would do if concerned about noise is grab a big coffee and a bite to eat and sit in my car in the neighborhood you are thinking of moving to for about an hour.
Looking to buy in a neighborhood in close proximity to an airport as large and busy as Tampa International , i might do that parking picnic more than once because once you buy/rent that house/apartment you are going to be stuck there for a while/
