In Portland, Oregon, there are floating home communities on inland waters. No NOT houseboats that you drive around. These are homes that float, where you buy or rent a space at the moorage. Are there any in Tampa Bay or maybe the Chain of Lakes near Winter Haven?

Red face Floating Homes in Tampa Bay or?

Are there any floating home communities in the Tampa Bay area or maybe the Chain of Lakes in Winter Haven? No - NOT houseboats that you drive around. Floating homes are homes that you keep at a moorage where you buy or rent your space. You can tie up a boat if you want to go out on the water. Lived in one such community in Portland, Oregon.

I shudder to think what insurance costs would be..
A Google search doesnt turn up as many as i thought there might be.

Seems theres a lot of rules/regulations/bureaucracy involved.
Houseboat might be your best compromise, some of which can be quite large.

It's not that complicated. I have friends that loved this life so much they bought their moorage and rent spaces to others. No yard work, no boat engines to deal with.

I hear you on all the benefits of having a house on the water, my brother in law lives on one in Cowichan Bay Vancouver Island. However it seems to be not so popular in Florida. Maybe some one else can tell us why that is.

Well, there was "Stiltsville" in Biscayne Bay a number of years ago- seems it became a victim to the elements, perhaps too much work for what could be accomplished?

Stiltsville - Biscayne National Park (U.S. National Park Service)

In looking around, there are reports of a Dutch company interested in building high-end communities out in the water- in this case not directly on Biscayne Bay but on an attached lake north of there somewhere. Looks like they've got big plans, but there is no telling how successful they will be- there are any number of problems ( tropical storms and hurricanes being just some) that they don't have to deal with in Holland..

I know of people that live in marinas on boats, but I've never seen floating home communities in the Tampa Bay area. I'm not sure how'd they would do with the storm surges we get sometimes during tropical storms. Cool idea though.
