The "opportunity" is gone...or is in 0.000002% of the cases where someone can "STILL" start at the bottom and grow.

THEN...........Nowadays you get this whole daycare generation, who did not have the opportunity of one and one parenting to be TAUGHT work ethic, and starting at the bottom and grow from there. Now they all act entitled, like they somehow "deserve" to be in high positions without doing any leg work, or gaining the proper experience.

.......THEN..........X2....LOL......Out of minimum wage you cannot go to college and better yourself UNLESS you live home with rich parents paying your bills. Minimum wage doesn't allow for a grown up to pay their bills, and pay for school, and we all know how much schools cost these days. It is very prohibitive, and even if someone doesn't want to be a dishwasher forever, they cannot get out of it considering the costs. I don't hold them at fault at all. Those employers who have low wage employees don't encourage or pay for their education, not entirely, but some...if they did we wouldn't be talking about it.

I do maintain my opinion that the medical field is grossly OVERPAID, and nowhere else in the world do they get paid such wages.
Oh, come on and stop this hysteria...
I moved to this country 1) without English language, 2) without friends, 3) without rich parents, 4) with limited authorization to live/work here (and wasn't even sure I will be able to stay in here), 5) with $400 in my pocket and somehow managed to get a degree, useful degree.

Yes, I started at community college because it was cheap. No, I wasn't eligible to get any grants/scholarships because 99% of them required US high school diploma or US citizenship and often both and 1% of remaining scholarships were given to Chinese and Indian kids with 10 our of 4 gpa so I truly had no chance.

It took me 4 years (community college + university) to get my degree. Yes, I had to work 2 jobs - 1 full time 7 am to 3 pm M-F (and take evening classes) and part time on the weekends. I managed to pay for community college myself on top of my rent without borrowing money. When I was transferred to University I had to take student loan JUST FOR SCHOOL EXPENSES and not for something not related to school (like some American students do - buying expensive clothing/shoes/purses and even cars). I had my child while I was in school - I took 3 weeks off after my delivery and returned to school. I was working full time + going to school full time + rising a child. I graduated then my child turned 1. I found job right the way (no family or friends connections). I paid off my student loans within a year after graduation. I am making more than my husband makes even though he has advanced degree and years of experience (because his degree is somewhat useless).

I am a normal girl - not smarter than other people. I have my weaknesses. I am easy to distract. I am no special and managed to get through school. And you are trying to come up with excuses for people who have everything to go to school and become successful... Give me a break! For someone who doesn't want to get something it always easy to find excuses.

Education in here is a piece of cake and if you are willing to study you can get pretty much any degree. If you a Florida high school graduate you can get Bright Future scholarship and get your degree nearly free... This country has tons of opportunities!!!

As for the medical field - the average salary is way below the highest that was posted in this thread link. And this is how it is here. And stop comparing it to other countries because it's like comparing oranges to apples.

How did she do it? The old fashioned way; she earned it.

In America you get what you work for.

If you dont want to work towards self set goals then you wind up in fast food and other low paying jobs for life.

Here everybody has an equal chance. too many dont take the chance.

I agree with some of this, but I will use our son as an example. We did not have the money in hand to pay for college and we did not want to loan up, nor him. So he went to a state college full time, while working full time at an entry level bank position. He paid half and we paid half for college. He graduated with zero college debt, 4 years experience in hand and turned that into a very nice paying job here over the years. Where there is a will, there is a way. But you are right....too many people feel entitled today.

I would have no problem having minimum wage be $10.00/hr. We would all then just have to pay a little more for everything. But for some of these burger flippers, how I started out, to expect $15/hr is absolutely outrageous. You want $15/hr? Get a certificate/training in a specialized field. Don't expect it because you can flip a hamburger over.

The difference between most states is negligible. The states with the highest cost of living and taxes are higher than the rest.
