Just received onward assignment to CENTCOM at Macdill AFB in South Tampa. Coming from Northern Virginia and know nothing about the area. Need advice about where to live. Here is what I am working with: 1) Just my wife and I - kids grown and gone so no school issues, can live anywhere. 2) Ideally would be 30-45 minute commute to Macdill. 3) Need a waterfront - bayfront or ocean) condo (high rise preferred), or townhouse, 4) $3,000/month budget for rent. 5) Want to be around a more young, progressive, professional, lively community - as opposed to retirement, older community. Been focused on South Tampa area, but intrigued about what I see of St. Petersburg, and of course Clearwater has the most spectacular waterfront/beaches - but quite a commute into Macdill. Tell me where I should live! Thanks!

Davis Islands or Harbour Island - or even Bayshore/Hyde Park areas. Quick commute, scenic areas. Near downtown Tampa. Living near a beach gets old and isn't worth the daily commute, imo. There are high rise places smack in the heart of downtown Tampa. St Pete marina around Vinoy Park area is nice and expensive, but wouldn't want to do the commute to MacDill everyday.

Thanks, exactly the type of help I was looking for. What is a realistic time, driving from St. Petersburg to Macdill AFB morning at 6:30 am and returning at 5:00pm?

Was thinking Davis Island as well. For that price you could also live right on the Gulf of Mexico on some World Class Beaches. Maybe check Clearwater, Indian Shores, Madeira Beach, etc....

Maybe someone who makes the commute can respond. Gandy Blvd gets stop and go once you get on the Tampa side and you're at the mercy of daily accidents that can happen on Gandy and clog everything up. There also is time to get through the front gate. That alone can add 15 mins to your morning commute.

I've done long commutes during my working years. It starts out okay but really becomes a drag and a huge time waste. During the winter tourist season, due to traffic and time change, I ended up leaving in the dark and coming home in the dark. I recommend staying close to work and using your free time to explore the beaches and other festivals/activities.
Harbor Island and Davis Island are very nice/safe. In Tampa, the Bayshore area or Hyde Park are very pretty. Downtown St Pete is a happening area with a marina. If you want to live on the beach, be prepared for traffic and possible evacuation during hurricane season.

living close to work was always a top priority for me while I was in the military (that's a lot of different assignment locations)......makes sense to live nearby as long as the place is safe, comfortable, and someplace that you enjoy after a long day at work.......
