Hi folks,
I may have a decent opportunity for position in far west st Pete (around bay pines).
Currently live in small city (50k people) in TN. Wife and I love idea of going south and especially of being close to beach but have some concerns. 2 small kids (4 and 1) and not sure about housing/crime/schools/etc. I have read several threads but was wondering if fam of 4 could realistically make it on tight budget. Is there any chance of finding a house in 190-250 range without crazy commute, in a safe place with good schools? I would consider crazy commute anything beyond 45 minutes. Any insight is appreciated!! I have looked at real estate and some seemed to be priced fine but you can't really tell anything about the area they're in. Thanks in advance: )

Looking at various houses and communities on the internet will help. What I did was draw a 25 mile radius circle around the center of Tampa and researched neighborhoods within the perimeter but toward the outer edges of the circle. Once I had qualified about 6 communities, I hired a real estate agent and spent a week with her visiting various homes that met my criteria and budget. We actually decided on a community during that trip and here we are.

I'd suggest doing something similar but make your 25 mile radius circle centered in St. Pete near your new office.

You should really spend some time here looking at potential places to live. Once you have one or two specific places in mind, you'll find that you get specific answers to specific questions.

I love and have used the radius method.

Thanks for the advice! The radius idea does seem like a good approach.

As for a specific question... As posed in my initial post... Is there any chance of finding a house in 190-250 range without crazy commute, in a safe place with good schools?

If you use realtor.com, you can enter price and other constraints. I think you'll find some houses at that price but cannot say how far you would have to commute.

No.

St Pete is not a large planned community. It's very sparse; as in small ran down house next to a mansion type neighborhoods. If "family" friendly is what you're after you should look at Palm Harbor which is north of St Pete and will have a much longer commute than 45 minutes considering there are no highways going from PH to St. Pete, but just roads with a million stop lights and a lot of construction.

A general rule for Florida is that if the house is cheap, it is not in a place with good schools. It's either an older area, or a bad area of town.

Could you potentially find a short sale? yes, but it will take months to look for it with an RE to find one. It's a gamble.

I agree that your price range is possible. I search St. Pete for houses in your price range and found 390 homes for sale:

http://www.realtor.com/realestateand...-190000-250000

You can use this as a basis and can add more constraints to narrow your search.

Thanks to all that have replied!! I have been using the realtor sites but sometimes the house looks decent but is in a rough part of town... Sounds like I will likely have a decent commute if I want what's best for the fam!! Really appreciate all the help again!

Default Move to Seminole Family Friendly place

I would highly recommend Seminole area where the family ratio is good. especially for the little kids.. you would love this area... look near the elementary school area... Seminole elementary area... bay pines is nice but the area is quite old and outdated and small area. Safest neighborhood is Seminole where we have the BEST Sheriff office in the state.
