My husband and I are currently shopping for a home in the St. Petersburg area. We love downtown and would like to stay close, however, we are having a difficult time finding homes under 180k near downtown. The bungalows we both love so much seem to be getting scarce and we would really like to find something with a nice yard on a quiet street, low crime, in a solid community and close to the downtown area as we love the art and music scene here. We really like Historic Kenwood but seem to be priced out. Does anyone have any suggestions on a community that is similar or seems to be up and coming? We have noticed that St. Pete is on the rise and neighborhoods that were once undesirable are now very popular. Can anyone help with suggestions? Thank you!

I recently sold a lovely home to a couple of first time buyers, by Gladden Park off 30th Ave. The neighborhood is becoming popular with young couples who buy these 2/2 bungalows and fix them up, and sell once the first baby or second comes along. You might try around there, its not terribly far from downtown and its very handy for roads to all over the county/airport etc and prob not that far to drive to the beaches. Good luck, you will find something but work with realtor, they can save you wasting time looking in wrong places.

My husband and I had the same issue when we started searching. We looked for months and things were either out of our price range or needed way too much work that would've ended up costing a fortune. In the end we increased our budget about 20k more than we originally wanted to spend. As lavendar said, we are one of those 2/2 couples, 1100 sq ft but love our neighborhood, Greater Woodlawn. If you want to live downtown, you will likely have to sacrifice size and increase your budget a bit from 180k unless you're willing you roll up your sleeves and do some dirty work also, when you find something you like, move quickly! We lost a few houses that were multi offer situations within the first day or two on the market. Be patient, you'll find something great! St. Pete is thriving and downtown is a great place to be. Oh, and the neighborhood adjacent to us, Magnolia Heights, is starting to gentrify pretty quickly. It's in between Woodlawn and Allendale which are both nice and more established. Hope that helps! Good luck!

Wait a little longer. Prices will come down a bit.

Like Kmarc said, you could try and wait it out a little longer. Prices tend to dip a little during the fall/winter but when we were looking there was barely any inventory during that time. Also, the Sundial downtown just opened and the new Trader Joes and other shops are set to open early next year which may result in a rise of local real estate. Guess you can never know for sure though.

I do not agree with you. St. Pete is definitely up and coming, especially anything near the downtown area. I have watched those prices rise SIGNIFICANTLY over the past several years.

I agree that St. Pete is up and coming. From my personal experience, there are a ton of new, young, people moving in at a rapid rate. Downtown is absolutely THRIVING on the weekends, it's no joke. Lines at bars out the door all night. You should see a "first Friday" here.
