DUNEDIN, Fla. -- A 29-year-old man is under arrest Monday after trying to rape a woman in her bedroom while wearing a ninja mask, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Nick James Nardelli, 29, of Dunedin, was arrested Monday for loitering and prowling, burglary/battery, false imprisonment, attempted sexual battery and possession of burglary tools. He admitted to investigators that he took part in the attack.

According to investigators, Nardelli entered a Palm Harbor home early Monday through an unlocked door and approached the bedroom of a 52-year-old woman. Detectives say she felt someone watching her, and saw the intruder wearing a ninja mask in her bedroom doorway.

Detectives say Nardelli jumped on the bed and tried to pin her down, but she rolled and they fought as he tried to pin her arms behind her. Nardelli got a zip tie around on one of her wrists, but she fought until he left the residence.

Nardelli fled in a car that crashed into a sewer drain and broke down at 1870 Whispering Way in Tarpon Springs, the sheriff's office said. Deputies were sent to the area to check on a suspicious person, and Nardelli was arrested for loitering and prowling.

A 911 call was also received from the woman and detectives then found a ninja mask, gloves, zip ties and duct tape in a nearby trash bin, according to the sheriff's office. They also located a Walmart receipt in Nardelli's vehicle for a hammer, costume, gloves and ties.

He admitted to the crime and told deputies he had fantasized about raping the victim. Detectives say that while the suspect did not know the victim, he had targeted her.

Nardelli is in the Pinellas County Jail being held on $170,250 bail.Happens everywhere...please lock your doors at all times...Thank God this turned out ok...

Anybody who does not lock their doors and windows is a fool unless they are sitting inside with a firearm waiting for someone to enter.

Exactly.

I hope the anti-gun people see where a firearm is a very handy item to have around. She could have taken him out in the doorway.

They won't. They'll just argue that the victim should call 911 like what happened here and say the perp will wait on the couch while the police come.

Indeed. Remember.... When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Those are prudent suggestions as well.

Thanks...I'm of the mind I really don't want the "bad guy" getting one foot thru my door...this way I'm not put in the position of splattering some guys brain matter all over my nice clean house!! That and the fact if I was awakened by a guy wearing a ninja mask standing in my bedroom door...I don't know if I would have the presence of mind to get my gun and get a shot off before he was upon me...

Exactly. Everyone loves to say "yeah if that guy tried that in my house I'd shoot him into next week..." But in reality, few people have ever been in those types of very high stress situations and would most likely not be prepared for it or be able to think clearly enough to execute the plan. In order to be completely prepared, someone would have to be wearing a pistol 24/7 and train with it often in different scanarios. I have no doubt that there are some people who may do just that, but not the majority.

We are gun owners but are not sleeping with them under the pillow or cooking breakfast in the kitchen with them so if I woke up to some guy in my room standing right over me or someone kicked in my door while I was in my living room, I'd probably have to fight them first to get to my weapons, praying they do not have a weapon. The woman in this situation did fight off the perp and got away without harm thankfully.
