I am considering a move to tampa/st Petersburg area and I have been reading some info suggesting that these areas have high crime rates. is this true? Are the inexpensive areas safe? Tampa was recommended to me by a facebook friend as I want to live in florida near family but cant afford south florida.

Thanks for any advise

I would not consider these places safe as there are a great number of people there. Anyone in those areas should make an effort to secure themselves and secure their property. There is a fair amount of small crime but any incident of small crime can and will become a serious crime if the situation slants that way. You can check out crime map, crime spot, FBI and other sites. We have a drug problem which tends to encourage crime activity.

Safety isn't about the geographic region, it's about the individual. Situational awareness will serve you better than some statistical data on crime rates ever will.

"Tampa/Clearwater/St Pete" is a HUGE area!
The "inexpensive" areas are usually filled with crime, because the poor people here are rich enough to afford guns!

Then, to some "inexpensive" might be $500,000...compared to a studio in NYC that costs $1 cool Mil!

I wouldn't relocate somewhere because someone suggested it on Facebook either!? I would evaluate your income, job opportunities, and personal preference/expectations of a certain area before packing your bags and moving on a whim. Florida can be "heaven" or "hell" on one simple turn of a corner...

Yes.

Clearwater is about as safe as it comes for a city of any size. Even the worst parts of Clearwater are more eyesores than dangerous. Tampa and St. Pete are both very safe as well, provided you stay away from the few bad areas they have.

Thanks. Just to clarify, I lived in another part of florida for 5 years and the person on fb who recommended tampa knows me very well I am doing TONS of research!! I have my own business where I can work anywhere. As for crime, I asked because everything I have read suggests st pete/tampa are unsafe areas unless u go to the very expensive areas.

Can u tell me the areas of st pete and tampa Clearwater to stay away from (zip codes perhaps if you know them)
thanks so much!

depends on what you call expensive - I call $500K expensive, others call $200K expensive
you can buy in a very safe location in the great bay area - pinellas particularly for between 2-300K

Asking for zip codes of bad areas is just going to hurt feelings here. There are good and perhaps not so good within the same zip code quite often.
