Im looking into various areas in tampa st pete Clearwater. How is the downtown st pete area? I saw a few threads suggesting it is a safe area. I found some apartments in my price range but they seem too good to be true and worried theyre in bad areas. Thanks

I live downtown and love it. I am 3 blocks from central ave, 3 blocks from the bay. I can walk to about 50 places to eat / drink ( and I am lazy and don't like to walk far). There are a few good small theaters for concerts. Saw thin Lizzy (black star riders) at the state which is right down town (central and 7th). A lot of cool shops and stuff in the area. It's a great mix of people. A combo of tourist, students , business people. There are a lot of apartments / condos in the area. Some are brand new and high dollar, some are older and cheaper. As far as safety goes, I do see some vagrants wandering around on my block and I do see some shady looking characters here and there but I also see a lot of young females walking around in the middle of the night and I have not heard anything about any being bothered. I also have not heard about any violent crime in the area. If you do go downtown, just make sure you stay north of USF. Oh, I do have to add, one slight irritation of the area, every fri and sat night between midnight and 2am, you can hear terrible techno music blaring from some horrid bar. Even with my windows closed I can hear it.

How is 7th St N by Mirror Lake? Found a place in that area and was wondering how safe it is there. Thanks!

couldn't tell you. I am not an expert on the area, still a newcomer here. I can only comment on what I see right in the middle of downtown.

Mirror Lake is really cool, but is transitioning. It feels like the 1950s happened and then froze in time (in a good way). The shuffleboard courts are there and they have been a rediscovery by the youngsters (Friday nights, bring a cooler). The library is over there. They converted an old high school into condos. I think Mirror lake would be fun for a young single person but not a family. Drive over and give it a look.

Oh fun! Thanks for the insight, the shuffleboard sounds great! I wish I could drive by but I live in Virginia currently, so I'm having to find a place online. I just want to be sure I can walk/ride my bike around and feel safe since I'll be alone most of the time. Do you have any idea of what travel time will be on a bad day with traffic from st pete to the lowry park area of Tampa?
