When I was living in Tampa, it raised my eyes the many cases of pedophilia going on in the Tampa area. I remember the local news frequently talking about such horrible crimes. Apparently its a huge problem in Tampa and the surrounding areas like Clearwater.

I know everyone has there own way to see things, but I don't think that the defenders can justify the many shacks, strip bars, xxx shops, and xxx video rentals, Hooters and nude full body massage joints that cram the city of Tampa, destroying all the city charm.

Of course a few joints here and there are ok, as is the case of other cities but anyone in their right mind will disapprove the overwhelming sex/sales activity of Tampa because it is bad for our children, our women and the overall state of mind of anyone that is not conditioned to this stuff by being a native to Tampa.

We all know that exposure to this kind of sex stuff could influence the weak-minded and the many existing potential sex-offenders that may feel wrongly encouraged towards rape, murder and pedophilia.

Is there any action taken by City officials to remove this plague of crappy looking shacks with lights and the so obvious sexploitation industry of that city? I am from New York city and it is hard to digest that no locals from Tampa are doing anything to fight this problem and let go what it could potentially be a very beautiful city with great potential for growth.

Don't take me wrong, I LOVE Tampa, but why people (locals) don't do anything about it? What's going on with those people?

Is there anyone with additional information about these topics?

Why people just don't say something, get together, like thousands in a crowd and tear such places apart? I know this is crazy, so what? they aren't going to arrest thousands? that would be a way to kick that trash out of that city, in my opinion.

I have some friends that need to relocate to the Tampa area even though I told them to be careful of that particularly since they have children. They are brave people and actually don't have a choice other than to relocate to Tampa due to their job, but they are worried. I hope things have changed a bit since the last time I was there, otherwise, I'll see them quitting their jobs.

Any information would be helpful, thanks

All I do is see you complain about the porno situation in Tampa, while bragging about the class and sophistication in SE Florida . I'm not justifying Tampa's porno problem, but if there is any city that is worse than Tampa for sex and sleaze, it's Fort Lauderdale, on the southeast coast. I agree Tampa has much potential, I think it could even potentially become the San Diego of the east with the right economic elements attracted and some innovative urban planning, but it does have a long way to go. And it's not because of the porno.

If there's a demand for a thing there will be a supply. Get used to it.

According to the FDLE semi annual stats Hillsborough county had 148 forcible rapes in the first 6 months of 2007.

Meanwhile Dade county had 361 in the same time frame.

Add this to the fact that Dade County Law Enforcement clears 15.2% of total crime compared to 24.8% clearance for Hillsborough and you get a clear picture of the crime situation.

Statistics are a truly amazing thing.

I know this got a little off track but it just shows there is not a direct correlation to the amount of topless bars and sex shops to sex crimes.
In fact if the original poster is correct and Hillsborough has a much larger legal sex trade than Dade county than the opposite would actually be true.

.
That's not a fair statistic because Dade has around twice the population as Hillsborough.

I am not in favor of the strip clubs but I do know why they are still there. They have been trying to close them down for years. Joe Redner, the owner of the Mon Venus has been engaged in legal battles with the Tampa City Council, which has tried to place restrictions on the strip club industry for 25 years. Mons Venus and Redner have filed suits that have reached the Supreme Court and have become case law in many court cases. It is pretty obvious who won..

The police do go undercover to find violations and raid clubs and arrest ppl even patrons but the owners get the girls out and they are back working the next day. They even put the patrons picture in the paper. Encouraging ppl to tear them down would do nothing as they would rebuild because they can according to the law.

Pedophiles are in every city unfortunately. There is a website that list where they live and with their picture. Your friends can check out the website, but that won't prevent one from moving in next door to them unless they live next to a school.

It is wrong to put Hooter's in the same category as strip clubs. You may not like the way the girls dress but they aren't strippers.

And more than twice the sex crime.

Per capita Dade is higher.

The OP was trying to tie sex crimes to the amount of topless bars and other adult businesses.

Obviously, as I posted, if Hillsborough has as many adult businesses as he says then there is no correlation.

I agree with the big picture your presenting. Just nitpicking .

But, it's a fact of life. People get sexual urges. If you think you don't, your either a lier or a robot. Maybe having all of that porn around is preventing sexual attacks due to release of sexual stress...I'm not a huge fan of sex being sold for 20 dollars on DVD or for any amount of money, but the fact of the matter is a majority of men watch porn in every major city. Guess what most people on the internet are doing right now. William Hamilton, I don't understand your pro Southeast Florida agenda based entirely on an obsession with strip clubs and adult entertainment, something that an already mentioned city in South Florida can easily exceed Tampa in.
