No one should move anywhere without some kind of backup, get a roommate before you move and save money. You should find a cheap area to live in and have 6 months to a years worth of rent as a back up.

Sounds to me like Florida has it right. Retirement down there is looking better and better to me.

good advice....I've driven through this small town of Palatka....really has that old FLA feel...I could live there....cost of living low, not too far from JAX.....there are a lot of nice FLA towns very unlike METRO Tampa/STP.

Default Palatka is awful

I would not see Palatka as a positive alternative. It has historically had the highest rates of poverty, domestic violence and animal abuse in the entire state. That should tell you something.

For someone who wants to be near a beach on a limited income, I would suggest Volusia County on the east coast, which has very affordable housing, public transportation, and accessible health care. There is now a high speed rail into Orlando and beyond.
