USF, Single, Parent, Student...
I'm a PhD student coming to USF with 2 children looking for a place to live.
I would like to know where the reasonable nice 3 br apts are near USF.
If anyone knows about rental housing that would be nice too.
I will have a fellowship and a housing voucher for the duration of my studies,(3yrs) so any info on who accepts vouchers would be great too.

I have no idea where accepts vouchers. What price are you looking for?
I would look in Tampa Palms.

Check with student housing.
The U has/had some apartments for grad students next to the campus. They vary. Some are nice some are minimal. How old are your kids? What are their school needs. There's an elementary school right on campus and charter middle and highs not far away but Tampa (Hillsborough Co.) buses for school assignment and the other closest elementary is not at all good. A 3 br. in Tampa Pines will cost
1200-1500. If you find anything cheaper within 5 mi. You don't want to live there. Avoid Bearss Ave., Livingston and any streets off of Bearss. You do NOT want the area bordered by Bruce B. Downs, Bearss, and Florida as well as anything going well South from Bearss in that grid. Lots of drug activity. If you have to, manage with 2 br. My husband and I have found for the most part, his is the only income, that in areas near campuses, landlords really raise the price for every extra br. The reason being that their target market is single students who share so 3-4 in a 3 br. is still only maybe 4-500 a month. USF doesn't have a huge adult student population and I guess the grad students mostly have spouses who handle rent or they can share. I'm just guessing but having lived in the neighborhood and even been on campus for one thing or another, I don't have the impression there are many students in your situation. Maybe that's why you got the voucher, Is this part of your Financial aid? Just be careful with anything less than 1K. You won't want your kids home alone there.

thanks
Thanks. I think I saw you in my thread and I appreciate your honesty. You seem to know the area very well. Thanks for all your specific help, it really makes a difference when trying to find a place to live in a totally unknown area.
Any other places to absolutely avoid? I will make my map up before we fly down on Thursday.
Thanks again,
Brrrrrrrrrrrrrenda from Pa.

Wesley Chapel
Try Wesley Chapel. What price range are you looking for?

That is going to be really tough in a decent complex. Wesley Chapel is a good little drive in traffic and very suburban. There might be some old apartments somewhere out there. You might want to check for a decent mobile. They do exist. I doubt anyone out there will take the U vouchers. You never know. Can you come up with any more money for rent any way?

I would check with and contact USF Off Campus Housing, this is a great site but only has limited complexes:
University of South Florida - Off-Campus Housing Home Page
Other than that, a realtor in the area who specializes in rentals.
