Smile well I agree in principal

but I must be older than you because it wasn't too long ago it was hard to find something if you had kids let alone any dog. I just don't think lying is ever a good idea. I've seen some pretty petty and nasty things in apartments. Pits can be very sweet now question but if they do get their teeth into you as is a dogs way when upset, they can do real damage. as a small, middle aged lady with some mobility issues I wouldn't want one coming at me. The problem for landlords is they don't know how well a dog really is trained until it's too late. If someone is going to lie about the breed, why wouldn't they lie about training and that's why it is not a good idea to lie. Negotiate do what you have to honestly but the lie will come back to bite you. pun intended.

Besides that, if your pet is trained and it doesn't hurt anyone, nobody cares. I've never heard of someone getting thrown out of an apartment because the neighbors SUSPECT a pet is a restricted breed. If you think my dog isn't what I say it is I say prove it.

We don't need a discussion about Pit Bulls in general here, unless you have something to contribute to the OPs original question.

If you want to discuss the breed you can go to the Dog forum. There are plenty of threads there about the good and the bad about pit bulls.

Does anyone know where they could find a place that will take their pit? They need a three bedroom, around $900.00 a month. House, duplex, apartment, anything that's decent and will take the dog.

Anyway, thanks everyone! Lemme know!

Most landlords don't want pets and why should they. There is no shortage of renters and who needs the head ache. A pet owner is considered an undesirable tenant regardless what kind of dog it is.

We were very amused when visiting a apartment complex in Tampa. The rental agent at first told us she couldn't rent to us because we have an Aussie Shepherd mix. We've never heard of them being banned so we asked her to double check. Ended up she didn't know the difference between an Australian Shepherd and a German Shepherd.

As we are leaving to go look at units she waves to a tenant, walking a pit bull. I'm sure the owner said it was a boxer and agent obviously didn't know enough about dogs to know the difference.

With that being said, I've found individual owners to be much more pet friendly than apartment complexes. We had a hard time because we have 3 dogs and no one would rent an apartment to us. However, we had quite a few home-owners who were willing to rent to us though, we found our current place through Craigslist.

You will have to go through a private owner, you won't find apartments that will accept pits.

I'm in the same predicament. I had two rottweillers the pair, but I lost the girl last year to cancer and all I have left is my boy. He is 7 years old and he wieghs 122lbs. He is a pure breed and there is no way of hiding what he is and his size and no one will give us the chance. We got him when he was 9 wks old and he has been raised with my boys and all my family. For the holidays he is just another member when relatives come. He is just an over sized clumpsy bear that show no harm and HE HAS NEVER EVEN THOUGHT OF TURNING on us. We show him love and respect and treat him with kindness and discipline. If anyone knows of an area, here in the Tampa area, please, I'm loosing sleep, hair, you name it. Even houses with backyards and offering an additional deposit are saying no to me and I know if I turn him into the pound which I hope I will never have to do they are going to put him to sleep. Even the dog rescue shelters are full because of all the Katrina homeless pets and the foreclosure home families that are turning in their pets. If anyone knows please let me know, I will greatly appreciate!

I will keep my ears open and let you know if I hear anything, maybe in non-deed restricted neighborhoods, or maybe research a local club for your particular breed(?).

As info, homeowners must carry additional insurance for breeds categorized as vicious. I found this out from a recent acquaintenance who has a Chow. Not having the special insurance may be why some private owners won't take your breed. I understand, really. I have a 13 year old Lab who's considered a member of our family.

TampaKaren

Can a renter buy insurance on their pets that would protect the homeowner? My thinking being since there may be owners who would rent to ppl with pets but are fearful of being sued if the dog should bite someone. Seems to me if you required them to carry liability ins on the pet, that would solve both problems.

Next question.. is there such a thing?

I don't know but I just found this on the net --> DOG BITE LAW - Insurance for the Dog Owner. No time to read it thoroughly, but it appears that owners can carry insurance (both homeowners and renters) to cover their pets. Hope it helps!
