Tampa part of Obama plan to bring high-speed Internet to needy homes

TAMPA — Tampa has been selected as one of 28 communities nationwide to participate in a public-private partnership designed in part to provide Internet access for children in low-income households to use when they return home from school.

Cities throughout the nation submitted proposals to the Department of Housing and Urban Development for acceptance into the pilot program, called ConnectHome. The Tampa Housing Authority submitted the proposal for Tampa.

President Barack Obama announced the winners Wednesday.

“We all want young people, regardless of where they start in life, to have equal opportunity,” Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn said. “The Internet is an equalizer.”

Many details still must be worked out, such as who can take part in the program. No federal money will be involved...

I agree 100%.

Im all for helping people truly in need but as a person who often worked with these "low income" people, most of them are not trying to better themselves. they are completely content with taking the hand outs given to them.

If Obama wants internet services to be provided to those who cannot afford it, fine with me as long as he pays for it out of his pocket.

We should reinstitute child labor so children can afford their own FIOS.

...While many middle-class U.S. students go home to Internet access, allowing them to do research, write papers, and communicate digitally with their teachers and other students, too many lower-income children go unplugged every afternoon when school ends. This “homework gap” runs the risk of widening the achievement gap, denying hardworking students the benefit of a technology-enriched education...
...Eight nationwide Internet Service Providers have announced they are partnering with mayors, public housing authorities, non-profit groups, and for-profit entities to bridge the gap in digital access for students living in assisted housing units. For example:
  • In Google Fiber markets (including the ConnectHome cities of Atlanta, Durham, Kansas City, and Nashville), Google Fiber will offer $0 monthly home Internet service to residents in select public housing authority properties...

If the school system did not expect these children to work off the internet for everything to make their lives easier - this situation would not arise. But the cost of books is ridiculous and of course the big IT companies are going to push this into schools and therefore make it necessary for low income families to buy the equipment they need, then they will need internet too. But then no one wants to pay taxes to improve the schools either.

If that is the case, I am OK with it.
