A major hurricane would do that part of the city a great justice...

A close friend of mine and her husband built a house in that area right on the golf course. The home is big and beautiful and is on a cul de sac of 6 other beautiful homes. Every home has been broken into at least once. It's a real short drive/bike ride from the hood. When we get together for an event, I feel really uncomfortable going to and from her house at night. She is a minority in the grocery store. Previously she lived in the Old SE. Lovely homes with water views. There were issues there of wandering homeless knocking on the door and sleeping in the alley. If you're progressive and want your children to have diverse life experiences, go ahead. You can get a great house for the money. I would not live there. I just closed on a place in Safety Harbor, the real gem of Tampa Bay.

I would say the same thing that I would tell anyone. Rent for a short time in the area you think you might buy and get a feeling if that's an area that you would like to buy and set some roots. What one person would consider dangerous and not worth living in might not match someone else's definition.

I like the reply from beach sportsfan. Try before you buy. I have lived 3 years in bottom of pinellas county. I drive through and shop at all areas atound me...including path to gulfport fl. I bike ride south of central all the time too(day time). No incidents. Sure I see homeless people...sure I see people pan handle outside dollar stores near to me....but I also have a great view of ciega bay! As a society I think we need to tolerate the apperance (not actions though) of less fortunate people. I see no reason why anyone should avoid an area just because others say so. Go look at it or rent there first like beach said.

This series of articles by the Tampa Bay Times pretty much sums it up:
How the Pinellas County School Board neglected five schools until they became the worst in Florida | Failure Factories | Tampa Bay Times

And just think, the articles are about elementary school age children. Imagine the adults living in those districts.

What that article points out is the failure of the Pinellas School District to provide for its schools in that area. Notice it points out that due to funding and board decisions all those schools dropped in past 8 years to a point that they are being outperformed by schools in other areas of our state with higher crime rates and poverty rates.
no surprise that those living in south pinellas either have no school age children, are affluent enough to send them to private schools or are too poor to escape the public schools
If they really wanted to improve the area they need to start with the school system.
Very sad situation.
