We sent a certified letter to someone from St Pete to Pinellas Park several days ago, and when I checked on it just now online, I saw that it had gone from here, to Tampa, then to Sarasota, and is expected to be back up in Pinelas Park today (it isn't, but that's another issue). Is this sort of thing normal? I could always call the post office, but their information is not always correct. Anyone else experience this strange routing?

Normally I like shipping through USPS. It's like dealing w/ something in the old Soviet Union. A nether world of misspeaking, total bureaucratic grid lock, and the occasional on top-of-things person for a wild card. You never know just what you'll get.

I've had similar things happen before. I remember sending a letter that went through Orlando first.

Thanks. I guess it's just normal USPS then. When we lived on the Big Island of Hawaii, when we wanted to mail something to an address down the street, the letter got sent to the other side of the island, then back to the mail sorting facility on our side, then days later it got to the address down the street (an address which I could see from our sidewalk). Weird.

USPS is consolidating their big plants to save money. That is where the mail is sorted and then either sent out via plane out or sent via vehicle to a local post office. There will be delays though.

Isn't plane fuel expensive?

Guessing our tax dollars pay for this incompetence too?

It actually goes to Orlando first. All mail in Florida is sorted in Orlando.

UPS and FedEX do the same thing, for FedEX EVERYTHING goes to Memphis, is sorted, then goes back to wherever it's headed. Not sure where UPS does theirs...

This is actually part of cost savings, it's cheaper to move stuff to a central sorting facility than labor to have all these sorting places throughout the country...

What tax dollars does USPS receive? What are you talking about? Their operating budget comes from postage.

That is incorrect. Tampa has a processing & distribution center as well as several other cities in Florida.
