And potentially make developers pay more for the roads. Just came across this article posted below and although its from last month I think the vote is soon (might have already passed). Seems 20 years too late imho.

Actually the Commissioners seem to have passed on this so far.

I believe Higginbotham, the worst of the worst when it comes to stuff like this, got all worked up when they were presented with a study addressing what they should be charging relative to other counties in this part of the state.

Understand that Hillsborough County has been undercharging when it comes to impact fees for years. That's one of the major reasons why our roads are such a mess and well under capacity. Higginbotham is one of the worst commissioners when it comes to this, and he raised a stink about the projected fees in the last meeting when this was addressed.

His complaint was that "mom and pop" businesses on major thoroughfares like SR 60, for an example, couldn't handle the impact fees that should be charged and are currently in place in other counties, like Pasco County. When he was challenged that the fee structure in Pasco didn't seem to be hindering development, he had nothing to say.

This is the same asshat who did an end run around our zoning laws so a developer could come in and build a Super Walmart in Bloomingdale that is bordered by two failing roads, Lithia Pinecrest and Bloomingdale.

The widening of Bell Shoals Road has been put on the back burner after several false starts because the developer that was to fund the project can't get financing. Had they paid appropriate impact fees when they developed the area in Fishhawk they built, the project would have already been funded. Instead we now have a major arterial road that has needed to be widened for years continue in its sorry state, and the taxpayers paying for it in terms of heavy traffic an long commutes.

Can you tell that this really gets me worked up?

Also, now the Commissioners are pushing the transportation tax, which really is an effort to shift the issue to the taxpayers and away from the developers. Had there been appropriate impact fees in place 10-15 years ago we wouldn't be in this situation. Instead, we've got uncontrolled growth and development all over the County with inadequate infrastructure, the cost of which is being shifted to the taxpayers instead of the developers who should have paid for it to begin with.

Grr.

Thanks for the insight, nice to hear opinions on this. It's an important topic that I think citizens of this county should be more involved in.

MortonR, you are absolutely right... Not talking about anyone specific now, but some of the commissioners are directly related to developers are actually in development business (or used to be), so no surprise they are not trying to increase developer's fees...
