The electricity bill is giving me the achies. We bought a 2500sq ft 1 level house near the ocean built in 1999. It has in-ground pool with filter running 8 hours a day. House is maintained at 77F (even though the Missus wants it at 72).

The AC is original to the house and so is the gas furnace. Gas stove as well. All the lamps switched over to LED. Energy efficient fridge in the house, although a full size fridge is kept in the garage (where it gets up to 98F).

So we got our first "Summer" electric bill - and I freaked out and nearly switched off the AC altogether (had a mini revolt on my hands). Nearly 2700 KWH consumed in a month! Is that reasonable? Am I crazy for freaking out and for wanting the kids to use cold compresses instead of ACs?

Is 2700 KWH a month reasonable? $270 a month Electric certainly hurts man, especially when I used to pay $30 up north.

In for answers as well.

I currently pay about $35/month for the electrical bill in my apartment, this is in southwestern part of Denver metro. In my previous 2009 apartment I remember it was a much larger unit and I had the AC on pretty much all day and night, even there I remember the electrical bill was not very much, about $55/month if I remember correctly.

Do any of you Florida natives know what is considered "normal" electrical bill down there? When I get down there I want to be street-smart/not get taken advantage of by utility companies.

I'll probably be moving down there as soon as I can set up some kind of lease or rental arrangement.

Get a few 12 inch table fans and put the a/c thermostat up to 80 during the daytime and raise it to 82 when you go to sleep. Run those fans constantly.

Electricity, is the most expensive bill you will have in Florida. Your cell phone is next and then Auto Insurance.

200 dollars a month is the average. 30 dollars for air conditioning? You should move to Iceland or Alaska.

This is a 1650 SF mid 1970's ranch house with original windows (that leak like a sieve). The highest bill last year was in Aug for $190 for 1700 kW consumed. Now finally switched to leveled budget billing (have to wait 12 months) and the monthly bill now is 125-135.

Yep, that's an expense coming up. If only we didn't have to replace the furnace alongside...

Wonder if a whole home energy audit is any good? Has anyone had that done?

Might have to do that. I got ceiling fans installed in every room. Time to make use of them.
