Depends on what you want out of retirement but I'll agree that Florida is just what some folks are looking for. Personally, I'll be headed in a different direction.

It's what some of us have been saying on here for quite a while.Affordable quality of life + sunshine = Tampa Bay.
This rates high on the yay-ometer particularly as I wouldn't go near Orlando if you paid me a million bucks.

It depends upon your experience. Personally in two years I am done paying off my house. I will be 47 when its paid off. I am in a brand new house in a awesome community. Its clean and safe. On Long Island I would have been paying my mortgage for the next 25 years. I would be paying 3 k a month for my mortgage. There was gang activity. Its dirty. I went from saving 2k a month there to several thousand more here. I went back there last month for the first time in two years. I am so thankful that I get to live here. My wife is up for the week now and called me today and said she cant wait to get back here. Family said to me what about holidays. Every holiday we have family members coming here for a vacation. We love Florida and we love Tampa!!!

Yes I paid 12k a year for property taxes. Now here with property tax and CDD I pay 5500. It was a no brainer leaving NY. A brand new house on Long Island I bet depending on the area would be 15 to 20k a year in taxes.

Citing someone's real estate taxes without revealing the value of the house, isn't informative.

On our last home in DC-Metro, the real estate taxes are currently $9,800; the house's Fair Market Value is between $925,000 and $950,000.

On our current home in Pinellas, the real estate taxes (without homestead or cap) are currently $4,200; the house's FMV is between $335,000 and $360,000. With the homestead and cap, our taxes are $3,550.

A new buyer who is not selling an already homesteaded and capped home, would pay the $4,200 until eligible for a homestead and going under the cap rules.

In a former life I was a tax assessor and a certified real and personal property appraiser.
