Default Anyone know what it takes to become a teacher in Florida?

Hi All!

I'm moving to the Tampa area (trying to find a reasonable pool home 3/2 to rent for a few years if anyone has any ideas...) from Texas (originally from New England) and have been offered a great teaching position at the University of Tampa. Yeah!!!

A friend of mine would like to move her family from New England to Florida as well. She is interested in becoming a school teacher (elementary or middle school) but is unsure of what it will take to become a teacher in Florida. She has her bachelors and about 18 years of experience in various aspects of child protection. Are there any teaching certificate programs, or will she need to get her masters?

Also, does anyone know what the job market is for a nurse? Her husband will be attending school to become a nurse and currently works in the mental health field.

Thanks!
Kim

Default she can do an

alternative track program here. 6 mos. Depending on what her bachelor's is in, she may be able to do that or she can go for elementary. My DH did his at Hillsborough community college. It's called the EPI (educators preparatory institute). She should check with them based in the Brandon campus. but classes can be anywhere in the system. Tell you the truth tho, if she has at least a 2.5 GPA she should apply to USF school of ed and do the masters. She will then be able to teach in a college setting. DH has not found a job with his alternate cert. even tho this was to be for "critical needs" he has checked the entire state. Guess language arts aren't so critical [sarcasm]

That depends what her degree is in.. She can get a job by taking the Middle school or k-6 subject area test (Middle school is Hhhhhard) and she would also need to apply for a temporary certificate. Once on the temporary certificate she will have some other requirements to meet within her first year of teaching. It all depends on if she wants public or private.. FDOE website can be very helpful
