Excuse me if I posted this already.
Can you tell me which St Petersburg neighborhoods, suburbs or west Tampa areas are MOST affordable for renting an apartment (and safe) for one person (me)? Price is the most important thing. ABout 900 a month or less plus electric.
I don't care about schools, jobs, nice restaurants, nightlife. I hate traffic. The coastal cities are out, I assume. What about Tarpon Springs? Largo? Would it be difficult to find a larger one bedroom for this price? I have been to the area several times. The beaches are the main attraction to me. I would even move away from the congestion somewhere. As long as I have supermarkets, drug stores. I live in Illinois and I am sick of it.

How much is electric per month for a mid size 1 bedroom?

Costa Del Sol Seminole, around your price for a 1/1 - I have an elderly ex neighbor who lives there, its a mixed community all ages, safe and close to the brand new Seminole Town Center which has Earth Fare, Chipotle, Steinmart, Bealls, Publix, soon to open LA Fitness, Irish bar (soon to open) Petsmart, Ale House, and lots of others, its still under construction but many stores open now, plus a new upscale movie house to open. Rec center up 113th St and only 5 mins to beach.

Anyone have other suggestions or tips?
Is my price range too low?

I do see nice condos for rent in ST Pete for 900 and they are one bedrooms. Additional bedrooms seems to go much higher. PM me and I'll tell you my findings.

$900 will be enough to find something, and you won't have to settle for a dump or a crappy neighborhood. $100 a month is a typical electric bill for a 700 square foot apartment, but there will be cheaper months than that during the winter. Keep in mind that rents in the Tampa Bay area have been skyrocketing and don't be surprised if in 3-4 years an average 1 bedroom will set you back a grand a month. Your rent will increase with every annual lease renewal, guaranteed.

Will you be working? Where? That will make a big difference in the commute.

Carnelian,

I am an Illinois native, moved to St Petersburg and lived there 14 years. I am now back in the Midwest in another state.
I was considering moving back to Florida or Illinois. It's just that Illinois has become very expensive, corrupt, and not a lot of opportunities anymore -- like the 1980's.
Florida has its issues too. Long hot and humid summers, low wages and high cost of living. I left when Governor Scott took office. Charlie Christ did an excellent job in office and made Florida a livable state.

The areas that are good: North St Petersburg and Clearwater. You could find a nice apartment for $800 per month.
The areas that are bad: Pinellas Park is not a desirable area. (Blue collar, trailer park area--not the retiree types either) I happen to like Pinellas Park because it has character and its gritty, but would never live there.

What's wrong with being "blue-collar"?
