The next hyperbolic statement about Publix Supermarkets is that they are going out of business

If expansion plans and new stores indicate financial health, then by all means Whole Foods must be thriving! Whole Foods is currently planning to open at least 10 new stores and has a new cheaper "365" concept in the works all over the USA.

Whole Foods is in fact a retailer in trouble.

The beauty of capitalism is give the people what they want and they will come back. If publix fails someone else will take its place( i doubt it but). Competition makes everyone a winner. Trust me, I will not loose any sleep. 29 pages unbelievable!

I know, right? LOL these grocery threads always get everyone riled up! Yay for Publix being #1. They are always in the top, now they ARE the top. I would like to mention, OP says he/she shops there because it is close to home. That is exactly what I said earlier in the thread - I shop because it is CLOSEST TO MY HOUSE! This is just one of the huge reasons for their success, they are in every neighborhood, they make sure to have one close to you. And they do carry a full line of products, are clean and have great customer service. To me, a winning combination. They do not need to have a sit down eatery or anything like that. I would like to see maybe more variety in healthy prepared foods, but basically it suits my needs just fine as it is.

Yup. I don't think Sprouts or Trader Joe's or any other chain is going to roll over Publix with their limited locations. The OP points out how those stores are seeing increases...well yeah, they don't have many locations. And not just because they are new to the Tampa area, but that's how they operate.

Never heard of Wegmans before, and now I find out they have like 70 stores in the whole country. Why ar you really comparing them, other than to pump a small business?

ETA: ok, its 1,144 vs 92.

ALDI & Trader Joe's - 10,366

Kroger - 2,778

Winn Dixie - 513

Albertsons - 2,205

HEB - 370

Oh god. Just go back and read 27 pages.

FYI, if you want to talk about store footprint, Dollar General has the most grocery stores in the USA, with more than 14,000 locations that sell fresh food and dry goods.

I read it. Disagree with a statement that a quarter makes a trend.

Also, other supermarkets in the conversation

Central Market - 9

Whole Foods - 431

Wegmans - 92
