My family and I are planning a vacation to Florida at the beginning of May. Since we have two children, 14 and 9, we thought it would be a good idea to stay near Busch Gardens. Are the gulf beaches better than the Atlantic beaches? Would it be better to stay further away from Tampa and commute, or are there any great beaches near Busch Gardens. (My son likes the waves and my daughter likes the blue-green water). Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Default The Gulf

is a lot closer but you'll have to drive. Also the Atlantic is still pretty chilly, Gulf should be about 75º by May. In the immediate area of Busch is not a great neighborhood but if you go up to Fowler Ave.right near the Univ. of So. FL there are a few ok places. Keep within the range of Bruce B. Downs Blvd and 50th St N. right on Fowler. These are big chains like Clarion, La Quinta Hampton, I can't remember all of them.
They're near Busch and safe to drive to. Lots of chain restaurants there like Olive Garden and Carrabas, etc. You can stay at Madeira Beach off of St. Pete and be about an hour, with traffic, away. It's a nice family friendly town. Clean but not a whole lot to do. No waves.
What I'd do is plan to stay over this way a couple of days and since the water will still be coolish in the Atl., take a day or two to see the Atlantic beaches if your son can handle the cool temps. Just remember, this is FL and we don't do big waves like say, NJ. and if it interests y'all, the Space Center. The state is about 125-140 mi. wide at this point. You can also hit Orlando on the way across the state taking I-4.

I would agree with Stpeteguy. Check out reviews for some of the hotels.. You also don't want to stay anywhere on Busch and I275.
